    What is the difference between a directory and an index?

    A directory is usually organized into categories like dmoz.org and an index isn't.

    thank you for your reply however I thought I read that Yahoo is an index- it has categories right??

    I think the definition of index could be interpreted different ways.

    The clearer distinction would be search engines vs. directories. Where search engine placement is done by spiders, and directory placement is done by a human.

    I agree, however what do I call dmoz, yahoo, looksmart, snap? Are the directories or indexes? Am I correct in assuming that these two words are interchangable?

    Well, a directory is an index of sorts, but an index might or might not be a directory.
