CSS layout: need to know how!

Hi everyone.

I was reading The new SitePoint front page in valid XHTML / CSS . What a good job! Did Skunk ever write an article/tutor on how he did it?

I need to be able, as part of a project, to recreate a well known web page using only CSS. Any suggestions for tutors or books specifically on layout and positioning with CSS?
I thought I knew CSS quite well, but when I tried to layout a page without tables, I realized I do need some practice!

The CSS spec can be useful (if a little heavy going): http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/ Parts of section 9, in particular, are well worth reading.

I'm sure other people can come up with more.

Some things worth remembering:
Some Layouts are very easy with tables, but hell with CSS. Conversely, some things are practically impossible with tables, but a doddle with CSS. CSS, in particular, excels at producing layouts that resize gracefully.

That's exactly the kind of help I was looking for!

If you (or anyone else reading this thread) had to choose a web page to recreate using only CSS, something of medium level of difficulty but still challenging, which one would you pick?

I bought these 2 books after Skunk recommended them in one of these forums. Well worth the money!

'Cascading Style Sheets: Seperating Content from Presentation' by Owen Briggs e.o. A tutorial/manual, very good, also deals with browser compatibility.

'Eric Meyer on CSS' by (Duh!) Mr. CSS guru himself, Eric Meyer (Duh!) A Number of case studies with a large number of very helpfull tips, tricks asnd techniques.
