Your question is a bit vague...but overall I'd recommend going with something simple and easy on the eyes...pick a good color scheme and go with it. Look around at other professional sites and emulate them to a degree.
Don't bother with a lot of graphics or slow-loading scripts. Visitors will be at your site to get the information you provide, and they don't want to wait long. Like TWTCommish said, go for something easy on the eyes, maybe a white color with some other basic color like blue or green.
Whatever scheme you choose, make it consistent and easy to follow.
