I can see benefits of it... Such as the destruction of FrontPage in favour of Dreamweaver. Think about it -dreamweaver integrated into Visual Studio.NET. Mmmmmm - Tasty. I wonder what would (will?) happen to Cold Fusion, though.

Interesting stuff could happen. It would make MS a very direct competitor to Adobe, who may deicde to get a little tighter with Apple again . This obviously wouldn't be so good for for the inroads MS has been making in the graphic designer market.

I woudln't want this. I mean, I'm about as "MS junkie" as they apparently come (if some PHP guys are to be believed), but this would be MS straying from their core competency, and their vision.

I'm not sure it'll happen, and I guess I'll live either way, but I can't see this really being a good thing for folk who use MM software, except that the price would come down nearly immediately: happens with every company MS buys.

Yeah prices would go down, except in 15 or 20 years time when MS have either bought or wiped out every major competitor the prices and licensing will no doubt increase dramatically, particularly when Microsoft as a company matures and has to start paying dividend to shareholders.

:lost: ... You're predicting what they'll do in 15 to 20 years? I'm impressed, since most people can't predict what any company will be doing in 2 years.

Microsoft already pays Dividends and has for quite some time now. The company is almost 20 years old.

won't happen, no need for MM to sell, they are VERY successful. I can't remember the exact stat, but I read in, I think it was Forbes Magazine several months back that MM is now one on the most successful companies of the last 3 years.

It really doesn't matter if they have to sell. If they are a public company, then they can be taken over by force... All someone needs is a majority position. In today's markets this can often be as little as 5% of all shares.

yes, a good point. I don't know what their position is on the breakdown of their shares. But, share holders should be very satisfied right now.

Yes, they would be a lot more satisfied if someone came in and offered them 1.5 share price as well.

MS Core Competency: To buy or put under any competing or desirable software company.

MS Vision: To be the only software seller (rent receiver, they no longer sell software, just license it) in the world.

except that the price would come down nearly immediately: happens with every company MS buys.
Yep, it comes down, then the support and new versions stop and you have to migrate to MS's version and that price rises.
Whatever happened to their office suite competitive upgrade prices?

Microsoft do not pay dividends, the fact they are only 20 years old means they are a young company, it is generally the case that only mature companies pay dividends. While Microsoft shows a year on year increase in share price / growth, investors are prepared to forego dividends, it also means that Microsoft avoid the label of being a mature company, which generally has a detrimental effect on share prices particularly in the tech sector and Microsoft avoids paying tax on dividends which counts as income and goes up to 39%, rather then the capital gains tax Microsoft currently pay which is generally capped at 20%.

Bill Gates wants to keep Microsoft out of the mature company bracket for as long a possible, but eventually the growth will slow and he will have to start paying dividends and that money will be made up from somewhere else, given that Microsoft has a near monoply in some areas and may well have it in other areas by the time the growth slows, the money will be made up by higher prices and licensing costs. Also when the growth of Microsoft begins to slow you can be pretty sure Bill Gates will attempt to give growth a boost through higher prices if he thinks he can get away with it, which with certain products he could.

:lost: ... You're predicting what they'll do in 15 to 20 years? I'm impressed, since most people can't predict what any company will be doing in 2 years.
It is fairly obvious that if Microsoft follow their current strategy of wiping out or buying the competiton then they will have a monopoly or near monopoly in more areas than they already do, when they have a total stranglehold on the market they will be able to impose whatever license conditions they want and raise prices to nearly whatever they want, thats the problems with the "free" market system it can't cope with monopolies.

We are of course meant to be protected from monopolies by the government / law however given most of the US judicary seem to own share in Microsoft judging by their rulings it seems Microsoft can do what they want and no ones going to stop them.

If Microsoft managed to buy Macromedia (and therefore get coldfusion) and managed to wipe out SUN in the next 20 years then see how much the prices would go up and they will go up it's what happens when a company has a monopoly, it's the reason we are meant to have controls on such things.

That's not up to Macromedia, is it? They are a publically held company, to my knowledge. And Microsoft solutions are generally pretty cheap compared to their competition.
