loops shorthand?

hi,
i m new to programming but i was wondering what is shorthand for loops called i.e while ($page_query->have_posts()) : $page_query->the_post(); i know its boolean but what is it called and how can i learn this sort of loops.because i work with wordpress and they use these kind of loops a lot.
