Since when has NS4 not been able to read linked stylesheets?

Just downloaded NS4.8--all 17.3MB of it--for testing, and I can't seem to get it to use <link>ed stylesheets at all. It'll "work" (as much as can be expected) with styles declared inside the page, itself, but not when I link to it. Even SitePoint has problems--can't seem to figure this one out.

And I really don't want to d/l it again! :-p

NS 4.8 will handle linked stylesheets for me. It won't handle @import stylesheets (which is a good thing because it lets me run two separate sheets) and it doesn't handle a whole lot of CSS, but what it does handle it'll pick up from a linked stylesheet.

Yep, that's what I remembered, but somehow NS's buggin' out on me. I guess I'll give downloading it again another try sometime when I have the stamina.

How did you get 4.8? I thought they stopped with 4.79. That's what I have and the <link>ed stylesheets work fine.

If there is an error in your stylesheet or an attribute that Netscape 4.XX doesn't recognize, it can throw out the entire thing.

To add to Wayne's reply:

NS4 can even screw up a stylesheet if you don't have the appropriate "media" attribute, which must be "screen". Or you can just leave it out. Otherwise your sheet will be ignored.

Yeah, that worked! Thanks a bunch. :-)

I had it on "all" because I used @media and I wanted everything in one file. I guess, I'll just drop the media attribute altogether since the browsers seem to treat it as "all" anyway, even though the default is suppose to be "screen."

I left out the media tag, but it still doesn't work.

Is this correct?

For a "persistent stylesheet" within XHTML it tends to take the form; <link rel="stylesheet" href="yourfile.css" type="text/css" /> the link to the CSS should work in Netscape 4.7x if it exists and is written correctly.

Try to remove these 4 lines from your external "monsters.css" file it might a help a little.
