I was wondering how I could set up my computer so you cannot access it without a password.

Before I come home from work, my little brother usually plays around on it...I hate that. I set up a Windows screensaver, but that is pretty easy to get around (just reboot the comp). I have also played around with the Windows password thing, but you can hit cancel and still get into everything.

I am pretty sure there is a way to set the BIOS to prompt for a password, but I am not sure how.

I am using Windows Me. The password thing doesn't have to be super-secure or anything, its just to keep my bro off unless I let him.

    Thanks!

I have both RedHat Linux and Linux Mandrake installed on another computer, in addition to BeOS and Windows 98.

This computer only has Windows Me. I plan on keeping it that way until the computer is at least a month old.

While I love Linux and BeOS, I don't have a use for them. Everything I want to do can be done from Windows.

Anyway, I don't plan on using Linux or another OS as my main OS for now at least.

    1. Go to the Microsoft Control Panel.
    2. Click on Network
    3. On the "primary network login", make sure it sat to "Windows Login".

Let me know if this works...

Push del, F12, whatever the key is to get into the BIOS during bootup. Somewhere under something like Administrative settings (or on the main menu) should be password protection, User Password or something like that. Sorry if this is ambiguous, but it's different for every motherboard.

There are also many security utilities located at download sites all over the net.

Another option is to upgrade to Windows 2K. When your done, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and hit enter and no one can use your computer unless they know your password or you make them an administrator.

There is a registry hack that means the standard Windows logon screen cannot be bypassed, if someone presses Escape/Cancel the computer will reboot. You can find details of it here: http://www.regedit.com/cgi-bin/detail?id=629
    Hope that helps!

Go to Download.com and search for 'Access Denied'

This is a tiny program that asks for a password during bootup.

I've used it myself to keep my own bro from my PC

The third time someone types in the wrong password, the PC starts making a lot of noise and this will probably get your attention...

I'm sure whether it works on ME, but it worked under Win98...

I use Win2k so you have to logon to get to use my computer, and unlike the win98 logon, pressing cancel doesn't help!

    I love those smilies

All seems great. I really like the password protection...its unbelieveable. It asks you for your password! What a cool thing! If the wrong password is entered, it locks up! if the right password is entered I CAN USE MY COMPUTER!

My brother set up a password for himself on my old computer, then forgot what it was (it was reallly long) but thanks to Win98's stupid security, I could just hit ESC at the password prompt.

    Ahhh...I need a break.
