It's varies quite a bit. I wouldn't worry about trying to figure out a rule of thumb, just make sure whatever you do, you aren't stuffing in keywords so the text sounds unnatural. For example if you want to cover these there keywords...

    Hotel in Brighton
    Beach hotel
hotel in Brighton with a pool

... then optimising a single page title for all three keywords will be easy, you might use a phrase like...

"We're the only beach hotel In Brighton with a pool!"

... in that way you get three keywords for the price on one in a single page / post.

Things get more tricky when your keywords / phrases are more disparate and don't fit well together. I'd say the bottom line is, if you can't create a title that sounds completely natural containing all your keywords then you're over optimising and the people & search engines reading the page won't like it.

It will depend on the total number of words in your blog but i will suggest you to target two to three keywords per blog and keep your keyword density around 3%. While using keywords dont just concentrate on using keywords i will suggest you to use synonyms of your keywords these will also help.

For a blog, keyword density is normally 2-3%. its good to use only 2 keywords per blog to gain maximum results. If you are using more keywords then it will be considered as spam.

Their is no limit of number of keywords you should take it in blog. A safe keyword density should range in between 2-4% for your targeted keywords. So, you can finalize the total number of words for your blog and target the keywords based on the keyword density.
