I hear LOTS of webmasters like 14 yrs run porn sites, and would do ANYTHING for the newest sega or pokemon
Just curious if that is true.

I have never heard that before...however, I would like to speculate on that comment.
Of the few porn sites that I have seen (Yes, I too have been the victim of those slyly written "ads", "giveaways", etc., in the past) are poorly designed and are pretty much a piece of..well...you know...that word that starts with a "c" and ends with a "p".
If there ARE 14 year old teens running such sites, the majority of them are probably amateur webmasters and have no clue how to design a decent site and/or how to create a membership site and run it effectively. Otherwise, if they were decent webmasters, they might get a clue and design sites for other people for money instead.
Granted, there probably are more 14 year olds "pornmasters" doing that than I would think, but how do they keep such a thing hidden from their parents (especially if they are making money from it -- and lots of it too)?Isaiah Walter

I know a couple of people who run adult sites. One company is profitable and the other isn't.
The profitable company (Company A) is run by a young man 21 years of age. He makes money by renting content to other adult sites not by displaying to the public. He makes a lot of money doing that. His sites are all up to date and don't all include pornography. He understands the "give a little to make a little" philosophy of the web. He also has diversified and runs non-pornography sites geared towards adults such as Psychic readings as such. It is all the selling of entertainment to him. There is an age verification system to try and weed out the children.
The other company (Company B) is run by a 40-50 year old woman and her fiance. This companies websites are all designed to be compliant with Netscape 2.0 and have weird 70ish formatting. They don't give anything for free and their subscription fees are 2-3 times the average. This companies sites lean towards smaller niche markets that are harder to support. This company doesn't care who sees their sites because they have an attitude that "if they don't see it here, they'll see it somewhere else".
If I was to build an ADult site I would like to be more like Company A than Company B and I did do research into making an Adult site years ago but the market is oversaturated. And I wanted something I could be proud of when I handed my business card to a religious elder or a businessman at a meeting, this just wasn't it.

Porn is for people who cant get girlfriends. The sites are sad and unoriginal. How they manage to get visitors astonishes me.
Lots of people use needing money as an excuse for having adverts for porn on their site. I >used< to run a warez/cracking site and we didn't have ANY adverts at all. I know I dont earn very much working, but it's a **** sight more than any amount I could have got for advertising porn on my site.
I haven't been on sitepoint for very long, so I dont know really what all of your atitudes to porn are... but if any of you 14 yr olds are running porn sites, they wont be visited by me.

I don't know (or have ever met online) someone who runs such a site...and I'm glad. Don't even want to venture into that realm. As for teenagers running sites like that - simply disturbing.
I'm a Christian...and yes, from a secular standpoint, it's just "entertainment"...but even then it's highly taboo to most people...and with good reason.
Simply put: there are better ways to make money.

Don't come down on them with some "holier than thou" attitude. Pope's used to have huge orgies back in the middle ages, there is nothing wrong with the people who make porn. They are not less of a person than you, they are not evil, they may just make more money. In some cases they're college grad students trying to pay their way through school, in others they have a bad hand in life and are trying to get money, then in others they just like the job. But they're not a lower class of person.
Also one of the best designed sites I know of is an adult site. <<< Link Removed >>> They have an excellent use of flash.

Nicky - 7 years on the net and never a porn site seen..........forgive me, I choose not to believe that!!
Have been online since '95 - and when initiated to chatrooms (something I became very into, but very rarely visit now, don't have time and forums are better). During this "initiation" I was gullible enough to "look at a picture of me here - (www.yougulliblegit.com/mypic) and be bombarded with windows opening all over the shop!
I am not a fan of porn sites - especially those that are irresponsible when it comes to access, but will not believe that anyone has NEVER come across one. What about all those dodgy search engine results?
When I did my degree, my dissertation was on the subject on Re-integration of Paedophiles - and the failures of the current system (very pertinent now!). During my research I used Law search engines to find articles about international approaches. On one of these searches, I actually came across the one and only site I have ever seen related to that subject - ON A LAW SEARCH ENGINE! I promptly reported it to both scotland yard and the owners of the engine, but it just goes to show that these sites can get anywhere.....

Holier than thou? You need to relax - fact of the matter is that as a Christian I find it immoral. Is there some kind of problem with that?
I couldn't care less about what the Pope used to do...in fact, that is totally irrelevant and has no bearing here at all. He shouldn't have done it: case closed.
Well, I'm sorry that some people need to resort to such sites for money...I'm glad in some cases it goes to a "good cause", but to mean it is morally wrong and therefore is not worth doing. You're entitled to your opinion, but there's not a single thing wrong with what I've said.
Also, I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to post adult links in these forums...I could be wrong, though. I just know that there are a *lot* of kids in here.
Oh and one more thing: I don't recall calling them "less of a person than me", or "evil"...just immoral. Hey, I do immoral things to...everyone does. Doesn't justify it for me.

I personally do not do anything that I find immoral or indecent. If you feel like breaking your own morals than go ahead.
Some of the most successful sites on the web are Porn sites and they are run by Father's, Mother's and couples. One such site was recently showcased in a National Business Magazine as a successful online enterprise. The site is called Danni's Hard Drive and has been around since the early 90's. It was originally used as a flyer for an exotic dancer (Danni Ashe) and grew from there. Now it is a multi-million dollar company with 27 employees, who most likely lead normal family lives.
True some are run by demented and twisted individuals but that is probably the exception rather than the norm. I would also guess that for every successful adult site there are 10 unsuccessful ones, just like any other sector of business. If it came down to putting up an Adult site or not being able to provide for my family, then I will put up an Adult Site. That is not immoral. It is immoral to coerce and manipulate people to participate in such a site. It is immoral to judge someone based upon a business without knowing that person and taking that person's actions into account.

Ugh, everyone is mis-using what I said.
You say its not immoral, I say it is. Yes, if it comes between physicially FEEDING your family, or not, obviously the choice is clear...however I'd be surprised to hear if that's really ever the case.
Judge people? I'm not juding people...I'm juding a specific action - running a site like that. That, in my opinion, is immoral. Does that make the person bad/evil? Not anymore than anyone else...I only have that action to go on, and that one action is (IN MY OPINION!) immoral. What is so hard to understand about this?
Geez...I state that I think running a site like that is immoral to me, and now apparently I'm oppressing non-Christians and juding people unfairly? Give me a break, and take one yourself...you may not think its wrong...I do. Me feeling this way does not mean I'm juding people or preaching; this IS a public forum for sharing knowledge AND stating opinions...we all state our opinions.

I was actually offered a job to make a porn site but I turned the job down because I wasn't even old enough to look at it.
Which would have made the job quite hard.

I consider immorality and evil as the same thing. I deem something immoral to be evil and worthy of Karmic Retribution (Hell in Christianity). Since I personally do not want to face Karmic Retribution, I abstain from any immoral or evil acts. I also try not to judge anyone or their actions because if I misjudge them, then again I would be subject to Karmic Retribution of any ill will that I felt towards that person.
Anyone carrying out an immoral act is thereby commiting evil and will be judged by the Divine.
Maybe that is where the confusion comes in.
This is not something against Christians or any other religion but this is how I believe.

I respect your beliefs...especially your morals. I always think of being evil as a possible by-product of commiting many (or some) immoral acts. I think these sites are immoral...I don't think the people who run them are mean, messed up, bizzare, or anything like that...I just don't agree with the entire concept.

I had a go at setting up a 'glamour' pic site once.
In the course of so doing I came across hardcore sites.
I'll say this: Pornography corrodes your soul. It makes people into things to be traded, paid for and used. If you look into the eyes of the subjects, you'll see that, generally, they're not having a nice time. Rather the reverse. People who use pornography are feeding an urge that can never be sated, and are coarsening their sensitivities.
If you participate in this industry at any level you'll be tainted for the rest of your life, even if only on a practical level; someone who has power to influence your life may find out about your past activities, and may not share your views about their acceptability.
Don't be tempted by the money involved. It's an ugly business, regardless how much its' participants claim 'they needed the money', or 'freedom of speech'.
It just ain't nice, and your mother wouldn't like it.
The one good thing I'll say about pornography on the Internet is that
webmasters involved in it are very clued-in technically, and their discussion boards are a mine of useful info. I understand that the porn industry was behind the push to develop browsers that could show pictures, and streaming media. So out of wickedness comes forth some good!

Shouldn't it be against the forum rules to post links to adult sites? (As has been done above)
There are MANY people who are quite young here, as well as the general notion that pornography is not appropriate for a public forum.
Care to comment moderators?

I'm a happy subscriber to playboy, I've occasionally watched porn or gone to a strip club, and I've visited porn sites.
I dont think its corroded my soul at all. And I know from reading my issues of playboy and whatnot that the people in this industry really enjoy it, to quote one recent playmate "What girl wouldn't want to be in Playboy?" Its obvious their opinion, but some people like to show off, they dont think of sex as dirty, or the body as dirty, they think of it as beauty, as art that should be celebrated.
I think that America as a whole as a misguided conception of sex. Our society is primarily based on puritan ethics so we tend to be uptight compared to Europeans. In America you can watch TV shows and Movies that have horrendous and descriptive violence, hell our cartoons are more often than not about some sort of violent fight. Yet public nudity, and nudity on the screen is avoided, sex education in high schools is largely inadequate, and parents are too uncomfortable to teach their kids about sex. Then they wonder why our kids kill each other and end up pregnant. Compare this with europe or even canada. Public nudity is much more prevalent, as in nude beaches, as in topless women walking down the street, in France you can find magazine covers prominently displaying a naked woman right at the grocery isle check out. In europe there are prime time TV shows that display public nudity and sexual behavior, yet no violence.
So I have to ask this? Why is sex bad? Why is nudity bad? I dont think they're bad at all. I think they're great. I think violence is bad, I think murder is bad, I think racism and hate crimes are bad. But there is nothing dirty about a naked woman, there is nothing dirty about a naked man, there is nothing dirty about sex. Its only your perception of these things. For the US that is a very liberal attitude that would never get me elected to public office, but for other parts of the world its the norm. And I think the rest of the world has it right. Sex should not be hidden and frowned upon, it should be enjoyed and celebrated.

But let me ask you something. You presented the analogy thats a porn site is to website programming what a car theif is to automotive engineering. I fail to see your logic, the porn site isn't stealing something, I merely mentioned the example of this porn site to contradict those that said that porn sites were designed poorly.

in my opinion both stealing and porn are immoral... juxtaposing them is to sort of say... "you donot have to do something immoral just to learn."

I don't think you understand: sex is not immoral, even to any Christian who knows what they're talking about. It's pornography that is immoral.
Obviously I believe every sin corrupts your soul to a degree...and all should be avoided. I also don't care what Europe does, or about violence...violence is a totally seperate issue.
