    Google versus Yahoo

Is yahoo really just a big phone book for Web sites? Does yahoo ONLY show sites that people have registered for themselves? Or does it also crawl the Web for content?

Yahoo is a directory, not a search engine. It doesn't go "in search" of content like the lovely googlebot.

Moving this to a better forum.

Welcome to SP btw - haven't seen ya around much

Most yahoo additions are from submissions - but some are added by editors without being submitted (usually in non-commercial categories).

google is awsome compared to Yahoo. I dont like yahoo much because they require you to pay to get listed in the directory.

Google is a search engine, Yahoo is not, it's not really useful to compare them.

Yahoo does not require you to pay to get listed. You can in most cases submit for free. Paying just gets a quicker review.

Google doesn't even have it's own directory, it just borrows a directory from dmoz.org.

You need to pay yahoo if you are a commercial site and want to get into their directory.

Google is a spider, it crawl web pages and store their info into database. Yahoo use google's data for their search result.

Yahoo! used to be a human-only edited directory of web sites, just like dmoz.org is now. However, since partnering up with Google for $7 million a year, Yahoo now uses Google as its #1 provider of search results. Yahoo's human-edited results still come up in searches, but Google results come up right at the top.... so if you've got good rankings on Google, then you also have good rankings on Yahoo...
