I received a request from a client who is looking to have on demand and streaming movies. I'm assuming that these movies will run 500+ megs each. What software would be recommended to handle playing these types of movies?
From personal experience FLV's are the best way to handle video. NetFlicks uses this, likewise with LOVE Movies. When I streamed a video clip a while back (pre YouTube days) I used flash to do this, worked like a charm.
Try using Adobe AfterEffects and then expert it as a FLV, if it works through there. You can also use Adobe Flash, but from experience, AE performs a better task on rendering as it's geared towards video playback. You will need a high powered rendering computer. When I did animation a couples of years ago I use to have a workstation with 32GB of RAM. RAM is the key to rendering.
Hello! According to my experience, I've noticed many benefits of flv player. An advantage of embedding video on your website using FLV file format, is that you can use different types of video player skins to play the FLV file, while most other video file format requires you to use their default player online. You can easily select and change the skins to your FLV video player , which in turn makes the player unique among the many others out there. Adobe Flash itself is a rich media creating tool, and offers lots of functionality to developers to customize the look and feel of its video player component.
I have used JW player on my site, as I add voice to TV programmes but I have had worries I should not be showing their video even if it is my voice, so now it is just a link
but I found JW player fast
They also have a video on demand server to which you can upload your files
