I have used http://selfpromotion.com to submit my site HumanClay.net to search engines but I am not sure if it is working. It seems the only search engine I get hits from is Snap. What other promotional tools are good for getting more hits? I have descriptive meta tags... what else?

http://www.webring.org is a good place to generate small amounts of targeted traffic. One piece of advice though. Don't place the webrings on our main page put them on their own seperate page and have llinks on that page leading to your main page.

    Wow

Your site is looking good! I see all these sites and the layouts all seem so much better than mine!

    Anyways, thats not the point

Most webmasters at big sites will tell you to submit to search engines manually. And personally, I agree with them!

I submitted manually to Yahoo, and got listed

I submitted manually to AOL, and the got #1 rank under "java help".

I didn't get very high on the ones that i got submitted to through a web program.

    Hrmmmmm.......

I have found that SitePoint has a really great list of tools

Jackpot, i found the url in my bookmarks

    http://promotionbase.com/article.php3?aid=169&pid=0

it has a huge list of tools

Also, if you want more traffic, read the articles about promotion on sitepoint.com .

If you can get a big site with similar content to yours to set up a reciprocal link, you could get big traffic

I hope i was of help!

You need a good design though, so people come back.

I have one site, mainly under developing, but the programming part is operational, there are just some tools to support you in promoting the site.
My personal experience observed that newsgroups/forums generate quite good traffic
