I rather like it! I humbly disagree with J in Calgary about the "two home pages" look, but agree with him on the wording (and the yellow).

This type of layout can have a good impact, but it relies on great page copy. The top portion really needs to grab the attention of your audience, and build up enough interest for them to want to scroll down. Words like "student", "currently studying", and "busy" are detractors. I realize you said that it's subject to change, but just food for thought.
I'm not diggin' the grass and building pictures on the top half. I think those would be great spots to showcase some designs. I think these images might be a big part of why the two page halves feel unrelated. The top half looks like a landing page for an architect specializing in sustainable (green) design.
In all, I think it's a very solid design. It makes the folio site I'm working on feel pretty bland.
