I used it in college and it was very direct and to the point. You will learn how to use various tools including the selection tool, most brightness/contrast techniques for photo editing, how to use some advanced CS5 features and more.
Now it won't tell you how to design things, only teach you the program. There's a large difference between actually learning how to design and how to learn a program.

Thanks Emylee that book is a blast from the past for me. I had these back when I first started learning Photoshop. If they're still around I'm guessing they're still the same comprehensive step-by-step through the functions of PS. I totally agree with your final sentence too.
If you want to learn Photoshop online, then you need to search about the Photoshop tutorial in search engine. You will obtain the list of links which you can then follow. You will be required to practice it by “hands on” training till you master it.
