Since a lot of us are still in education, I thought I would make a general enquiry into what everyone was doing next term be it at college, school or university.

I am starting my first year at 6th form on the 4th September, studying Maths, Physics, Economics and Geography along with "general studies". I have just finished GCSEs.

There is no valid reason to this thread, I was just interested

We didn't even have computer studies when I was at school. I left in 1986 and had a ZX Spectrum I was very proud of.

    I'm so old!

Well, I'm going back to school in January, which will be my first term since 1995, when I graduated from University with a degree in History.

I'll be getting my masters degree in education, on my way to being an elementary school teacher, probably for kids around 1st grade.

Can someone tell me what ages each grade is?

When I was at school you went from 1st year (11-12 years old), 2nd year, third year etc up to 5th year (15-16 yrs) then 6th form.

Now the UK is the same as the US (I think) with 11th grade, etc. How do they relate, which is older 12th or 10th?

I'll be finishing my junior year in college with a major in Spanish, a minor in international studies and possibly a second minor in business administration.

Our computer science classes still learn on 386s, so you can understand why I didnt choose that field

    I've just finished my GCSE's too (I got 3 A*s, 7 As, and a B).

This term (I started on Thursday), I am studying A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics. I also have to take part in three compulsory "general studies" subjects: Use of English, Divinity, and Information Technology (which I will get an RSA in at the end of the course). It doesn't really matter to me because I already have an A-Level in Computing which I sat when I was 14.

In the US the normal grades go like this in public schools:

You start off with preschool, that's always private and there's no set age. Then you go to elementary school...

    Kindergarten: ages 5-6
    1st grade: 6-7
    2nd: 7-8
    3rd: 8-9
    4th: 9-10
    5th: 10-11

    and then Middle school...

    6th: 11-12
    7th: 12-13
    8th: 13-14

    then High School...

    9th: 14-15 (high school freshman)
    10th: 15-16 (sophomore)
    11th: 16-17 (junior)
    12th: 17-18 (senior)

Some towns may do this differently that mine, but the basic idea is the same.

    What are the GCSEs?

Are the GCSEs like the AP or IB tests?

I looked and found this site http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/gcsebitesize/ , but it must be for lower divisions? Some of it is easy stuff... Though I like the idea of focusing on concepts and less on memorization.

Some of the sections seems to be pretty inane though. for example, The "american west" review has a large section on cowboys. They were only important for a short period of time, but I guess they capture everyone's imagination and that's important. The flash animation of a cowboy is pretty funny. Did you know they wore boots? http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/gcseb...boys_rev.shtml

Some of the other sections were quite interesting, though. The Information Technology section is different from anything we do here.

I don't know why I wrote all this; I guess I have nothing better to do right now.
