Since the logo of a site must have something to do with your site, I first take the topic of my site, then the name and well, from there on it's just waiting till some idea pops up

www.mayaposch.com - My personal site and blog.

Logos I create have to do with the overall theme and atmosphere of the site. I draw quite a few sketches on paper first, and once I get a concrete idea, I open up Photoshop and go from there!

I usually sketch about 10 or so basic designs right as I'm falling asleep (I'm most awake at that time, for some reason...) then the next day I open up Photoshop and make the text. Only the text none of the fancy schmancy stuff in the finished version. Then that night I draw the "fancy schmancy" stuff on a pad of paper. The next morning I open up Photoshop and make the fancy stuff (each sketch) and then color it and see which one looks best.
I don't use regular pencils. I have about 6 or 7 drawing pencils with special drawing paper. Yeah so it sounds stupid but it actually makes a difference.
p.s. on average it takes about 1-2 weeks for me to 100% finish a logo.
Hope this helps..

Came across this the other day,
http://www.designerdude.com aka http://www.vone.org
This guy designs logo's for free, I think he's trying to build up a portfolio.
At the moment he isn't accepting new requests for logos in order to clear a backlog. But check it every so often. His logos are among the best I've seen at any price.

This guy does great designs... he already made one for me and it was FREE and done w/in 36 hours!!

I generally make a crappy logo and then wait for someone with some graphic design experience to get tired of looking at it and offer to make a better logo for my site.
(Okay, I don't really try do that, but with one of my sites, I did design a whole logo, etc. for the page only to have one of my regular visitors email me with a far better logo a few days after the site opened.)

LOL Ryan!
I usually mess around a bit...I have around 300 fonts...I always find myself choosing the text and scrolling through almost ALL of them to find one I like.
I also try to find a suitable dingbat and stick an icon in there somewhere to go with the (hopefully) cool looking text.
