find and register domains through my site

Is there a way to provide a search and ability to register domains through my site? I asked my current host (1and1) and they don't have something available. I don't mind developing the functionality but I have no idea where to start. But I think there has to be an out of the box thing out there some where.

It's certainly possible, because several other sites are doing it. But if you want a ready-made solution, I'm afraid I can't suggest anything. I suspect it doesn't exist - but maybe someone else can put you on the right track.
