    stretching content area layer

i'm pretty new to css, so i'm not sure if this can be done, but... i have my navigation on one side of the screen. it is in a layer that is "x" px relative to the left side of the screen. then i have a shoutbox in a layer that is "x" px relative to the right side of the screen. so no matter what size the screen is, the nav will be all the way to the left and the shoutbox will be all the way to the right. now my problem is i need the content area to stretch so that it takes up all the space inbetween the nav and the shoutbox. is there someway i can do this?
    thanks.

It sounds like you're trying to create something like THIS. Check it out - you can copy the CSS right from the site.
