    Publishing MySQL Data on the Web

    PHP Code:
    <?php
    $link
    mysqli_connect ('localhost''root''nestle324');
    if (!
    $link)
    {

    $output 'Unable to connect to the database server.';
        include
    'output.html.php';
        exit();
    }

    if (!
    mysqli_set_charset($link'utf8'))
    {

    $output 'Unable to set database connection encoding.';
        include
    'output.html.php';
        exit();
    }

    if (!
    mysqli_select_db($link'ijdb'))
    {

    $output'Unable to locate the joke database.';
        include
    'output.html.php';
        exit();
    }

    $output 'Database connection established.';
    include
    'output.html.php';
    ?>
    i have Kevin Yank Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP and MySQL and the above script looks exactly like the book but i keep getting this error:
    Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect() in C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\connect\index.php on line 2

    Hmmm, I'm not sure what else it could be. Perhaps other members here know. If I got more info, I will post them.

    There is a database (sqlite) built into PHP 5. Perhaps you could use that instead.

    If you are going to try what Mandes has suggested and still getting the error, this article may explain why:

    What you will most likely find (and Mandes is leading you towards), is that the mysqli library is not enabled. mysql and mysqli are seperate libraries in the config file.
    Never grow up. The instant you do, you lose all ability to imagine great things, for fear of reality crashing in.

    make a file called info.php and put in it these 3 lines

    <?php
    phpinfo();
    ?>

    save to your server, then run from a browser, you should get a long page of settings, if you post that we may get some idea as to whats going on.

    Have you tried what was suggested by Tom's link in post6 ?

    That clears that up then. You don't have the MySQLi extension enabled.

    If you're new to all this, you might want to consider downloading WAMP Server instead. It allows you to get ahead with the actual PHP part of learning PHP.

    Once you're comfortable with PHP, then's the time that you should start worrying about the server configuration.

    well i could do that but i want to know how each part works?

    ;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; WARNING ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; This is the default settings file for new PHP installations.
    ; By default, PHP installs itself with a configuration suitable for
    ; development purposes, and *NOT* for production purposes.
    ; For several security-oriented considerations that should be taken
    ; before going online with your site, please consult php.ini-recommended
    ; and http://php.net/manual/en/security.php.

    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; About php.ini   ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior.  In order for PHP to
    ; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'.  PHP looks for it in the current
    ; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
    ; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
    ; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory.  The
    ; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
    ; the -c argument in command line mode.
    ;
    ; The syntax of the file is extremely simple.  Whitespace and Lines
    ; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
    ; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
    ; they might mean something in the future.
    ;
    ; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
    ; directive = value
    ; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
    ;
    ; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
    ; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
    ; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
    ;
    ; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
    ; |        bitwise OR
    ; &        bitwise AND
    ; ~        bitwise NOT
    ; !        boolean NOT
    ;
    ; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
    ; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
    ;
    ; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
    ; sign, or by using the None keyword:
    ;
    ;  foo =         ; sets foo to an empty string
    ;  foo = none    ; sets foo to an empty string
    ;  foo = "none"  ; sets foo to the string 'none'
    ;
    ; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
    ; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
    ; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
    ;
    ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; About this file ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; All the values in the php.ini-dist file correspond to the builtin
    ; defaults (that is, if no php.ini is used, or if you delete these lines,
    ; the builtin defaults will be identical).

    Once you're comfortable with PHP, then's the time that you should start worrying about the server configuration.
    i rather do it individually how do i enable MySQLi extension

    Even though it is good to learn how things work but sometimes it is better to start with things that are already working. I used to configure my PC manually with Apache, PHP, and MySQL separately till I found WAMP Server and now I don’t think I will ever do what you are doing now. Unless you are thinking about starting up a web hosting services, things like this will certainly good to know. But if you just want to play with programming using PHP and MySQL then just install WAMP, it’s only take a couple of minutes.

    *AMP(P) programs are quite common. I personally use XAMPP for my local development (And I do run a local directory named "sitepoint" which has about 50 PHP files in it just of stuff our users have said doesnt work).

    As has been said, unless you're going to be a server administrator, the ins and outs of running the software is likely unnecessary. (Note: Knowing how to modify php.ini, however, may be useful.)

    PHP Code:
    <?php
    $link
    mysqli_connect('localhost''root''nestle324');
    if (!
    $link)
    {

    $error 'Unable to connect to the database server.';
        include
    'error.html.php';
        exit();
    }

    if (!
    mysqli_set_charset($link'utf8'))
    {

    $output 'Unable to set database connection encoding.';
        include
    'output.html.php';
        exit();
    }

    if (!
    mysqli_select_db($link'ijdb'))
    {

    $error 'Unable to locate the joke database.';
        include
    'error.html.php';
        exit();
    }

    $result myslqi_query($link'SELECT joketext FROM joke');
    if (!
    $result)
    {

    $error 'Error fetching jokes: ' mysqli_error($link);
        include
    'error.html.php';
        exit();
    }

    while (
    $row mysqli_fetch_array($reesults))
    {

    $jokes[] = $row['joketext'];
    }

    include
    'jokes.html.php';
    ?>

    i keep getting this error:

    ( ! ) Fatal error: Call to undefined function myslqi_query() in C:\wamp\www\listjokes\index.php on line 24
    Call Stack
    #-----Time-------Memory-------Function---------Location
    1------0.0009----679160------{main}( )--------..\index.php:0

    How do i find errors in the mist of the code everything looks correct but there is something wrong?

    Looks like back to your original problem.

    Do what Mandes has suggested and let us know what you got.
