    Walking a Marathon

    Just wanted to share an event I'm doing in around three weeks time for a very worthy cause.

    I'll be walking a marathon (26 miles) in my Kilt from Hampden (Scotland Football Stadium) to the bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond in order to make a wee difference to the children who are in need of a little support. Please dig deep, any donations would be greatly appreciated.

    Good luck! I ran a marathon this past October and it certainly was an experience. Near cried at the end. Hope you have a successful walk!

    I ran several marathons last month and i only reached up to five kilometers. still need to lose some of that excess weight.

    Sustran's pathway, westbound along the River Clyde from Hampden, Past Bells Bridge the route passes The Tall Ship before heading away from the riverís edge. The route used to follow the course of the disused Partick to Yorker railway, but the Glasgow Harbour area is being redeveloped so please look out for signed diversions. After passing close to the docks of Clydebank, the route joins the towpath of the Forth and Clyde Canal, passing under the Erskine Bridge, and past The Saltings Ecology Park into Bowling where the canal meets the Firth of Clyde and a marina is being developed.     Looks like a really good route.

    I've walked the Clyde Walkway to Partick many times when we stayed in Glasgow, and I've also walked the Forth & Clyde Canal from Glasgow to Bowling a couple of times. The bit beyond Bowling is new to me but sounds lovely.

    My husband is a marathon/half marathon runner, and one of his favourite routes is the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow, part of which goes over the Kingston Bridge. I don't even like going over there in a car, but he loves running it.

    Had my posterior capsulotomy surgery yesterday, still recovering and have been told to take it easy for a week. Event is in a fortnight, week off, week on.

    Ugh - not the best of timing there. Still, at least now you should be able to see where you're going, which might help.

    Hope the weather improves in time for your walk. We had glorious sunshine here for the Sport Relief Mile last weekend - and today it's snowing. I'd offer to knit you leg-warmers, but I don't think I could do them in time.

    Sod's Law. The weathers been rather nice for the last couple weekends here in Ayr as well too. It comes to event weekend and it's dreek, rainy, sleet, windy... I'd much prefer a causal 26mile strool in the sunshine of course but Heh, Bring on the wind and the rain!!!

    If it's any consolation, the BBC online forecast is now showing dry weather on Sunday until 4pm in Glasgow and Balloch. Cold is easier to cope with than wet, in my opinion, so there's a wee cheery-uppy. (Of course, the Beeb have got it wrong before...)

    Less that 48 hours to go!!!! I've got my power bars, vaseline petroleum jelly and catecholamine rush playlist at the ready!
    For the last 1-2 miles, if there is a crowd. Put the music away. It's an inspiration to hear all the people cheering you on .

    JOB DONE!!!!!

    Overall it certainly wasn't an easy task, and my feet are suffering from it today, but I'd do it again.

    Before I knew it, I had done 16 miles, time had flew in and I was feeling pretty good. But from that point in, it was hellish, simply because of the sign posts every mile reinforcing the distance left. It seemed that the last 5 mile stretch dragggggged in. Mostly, due to the reduced pace and being aware of the distance.

    I luckily wasn't troubled by any blisters (I have one on my left ankle, but I didn't feel it), so treating my feet before the during worked wonders. However, the last 2 miles was real hell because I had throbbing pains at the bottom of my shins at the ankle every step, I have never done this or near this sort of distance before so I'll put that done too not being conditioned to it. Even today, when I lift my toes upwards towards my shin (dorsal flexion), it's painful and I'd certainly like to know more about that, as in how to ease it off and strengthen it (without the obvious which is walk more 26miles) so maybe some experienced runners can chip in here?

    Overall, it was a great experience, spoke to many strangers, and it was all for a great cause!

    Well done! Did the weather stay dry for you? It looks grey but not too wet in the pictures. Marathon-running-husband says that 20 miles is considered the "real" half-way point, because the last six are such hard work. Did you find yourself speeding up under the Erskine Bridge? For some reason, I always have the sensation it's going to fall on me. I dunno why - the only other bridge that makes me feel like that is the Kingston Bridge. Sure helps me put on a spurt of speed.
