Opera 7 beta now available

I'm using it at the moment - it's pretty slick. Support for CSS / HTML4 / other standards is excellent, support for Javascript seems much better than before and support for the DOM looks promising but not as good as I was hoping for.

Using it now - a few things I notice:

1: In the very window I'm typing now, there is no border by default. This may well be a "proper" implememtation of .css, in which case it's good, but it is a little disconcerting.
2: The bar on the left - while great functionally, can get annoying - how do I lose it? I notcie that @ 1024*768, the viewable window when the bar is present seems to be exactly that of a normal 800*600 window - nice
3: It is blisteringly fast - very impressed there
4: When hitting F11, the .css interpretation seems to revert to that of the Opera 6x series?
5: I like the fact that the tabs are now the same as Mozillas - it seems to make more sense to me now.
6: The funly animated icons are sweet - and incredible considering how small the program is (take note IE and NS programmers )

6.5: They've implimented automatic favicons on the tabs - woohooo. While not part of the w3c spec (I don't believe), I find this tremendously useful on Linux. Amazing that someones nicked one of MS's ideas and improved it for a change the MS implementation of favicons suxs!...

The translate function doesn't seem to be working either - I quite liked that

I like the hover over effect on the tabs (far too easily pleased)

Oh lordy, look at the currently greyed out toggle options:

Emulate text browser
Accessibility Layout
Show images and links only
High contrast (w/b)
High contrast (b/w)
Skin page background
Hide non-linking images
Hide certain sized elements (aggresive)
Disable tables
Show structural elements
Debug with outline
Use default forms design

Well, this looks pretty neat and functional. The speed increase is really noticeable! Also great that there's the option "Open requested pop-up windows only".

As a little extra, they've slipped in support for the HTML 2.0 "link" tag for page navigation, too.

Lynx, Mozilla and now Opera. Who's next?

I'm a die hard Opera user (and have the recept to prove it) so I was really excited to hear that v. 7 was available already. In addition to what's already been mentioned, a bug in handling of swf's stored in a separate directory from the .html file has been fixed. There's also funky new chrome that you can instantly change to one of four colours (just neat eye candy), and I really like the added options on the hotlist - espeically nice to have the transfers window tucked away like that (there's also a history button there and "windows" which is semi-redundant. You can also easily make any webpage a tab on the hotlist if you want to)

I have a little hard time getting used to the page-tabs being on the top of the page... But I think I'm going to like it once I'm getting used to it.

Also there seems to be a little bug. I don't know why, but sometimes in the same paragraph, there are different font sizes, and they change when I scroll, or mark the text... It is especially a problem in www.dinside.no A very popular Norwegian page... Does anybody else have that problem?

Otherwise, I really like it...

Original H: those options aren't greyed out. You need to select

View->style->user mode

first. Tasty stuff, I can't seem to get my bookmarks from Opera 6 though...

[edit]: silly boy, done it now. I couldn't get it to work by right-clicking the hotlist, only by using the file menu.

2 things I like about the new features (being a semi-dedicated web developer of course):

The
1. "Show Structural Elements" mode.
and
2. "Debug with outline" mode.

Yep, now mserms shown me how to turn 'em on (/slaps self!), they are great features . I'm also a fan of the "Colour Scheme" changer....although does this mean no skinning?

No no, they're not restricted (I think we have a usability issue here Opera developers ).

As instructed by serms, "View->style->user mode", then all those options are available (in fact you can select multiple )

I like them on the bottom! (In Opera 6, at least, you can change the location of it by right-clicking on it [top, left, right, bottom are the options if I remember correctly]. Still true? I really liked the customization of Opera--still there?)

Yes, you can still have your tabs on any side of the page. Some of the customisation options from 6 aren't there, but I think that's more due to the beta-ness of this version than anything else.

Well, I like it, pretty much!

I did experience a few crashes, which were annoying enough, but then it didn't start up with where I was browsing last, even though I checked the option. I also had trubble with the Preferences--they're not all implemented, I guess. Other than that, I'm not a fan of the new look; 'thought the ol' version six looked snazzy enough and wasn't quite as "strong."

On the bright side, man it's fast! Also, it seems more configurable (drag 'n' drop menu items and such), though in V.6 the tabs changed shape to compliment they're position (top, left, right, bottom) better. I wish they'd take the customization a little farther and let you rearrange the order of the tool bars, too, not just they're location (and would let you put the ad area on the bottom). I like the links bar too and all the different display modifications you can make. Oh, and press <Shift> <F11>--ain't that neat! :-D

I am mildly distressed, though, that they seem to be allowing more invasive ads!

Essentially, it's support for the HTML 2 <link> tag. Until recently, the only browsers to support it were Lynx* and (I think) iCab. Now Mozilla and Opera do, too.

I've included link tags on a site I did here

The HTML 4.0 spec has them.

Slashdot uses them, too.

This allows authors to include site navigation information in a page (next/previous page, contents, and anything else they feel like) and then the browser can pick this stuff up and include appropriate UI buttons.

*I think it's kinda cool that Lynx still has a feature the IE doesn't.

Anyway I LOVE Opera, it's my default browser. Opera 7 is a great fun! I've already found a way to remove the banner

It doesn't support CSS for the forms borders I hope they'll fix this bug.

Has anyone had any luck applying styles using the small-screen view? I just had a quick go using a linked style sheet set to media="handheld", but nothing seemed to have any effect.
