    Alexa

Hello, what is Alexa, what effects your ranking and what happens if you have a great ranking?

    Thanks

Alexa ranks web sites based on traffic.

Your ranking is affected only by traffic from people with the toolbar installed.

Nothing happens if you have a great ranking (bragging rights, maybe?).

It can have some value if you are aware of its limitations (only used by a limited number of people). I use it a lot for comparative purposes between competing sites. It is quite good for giving an idea of rough trends.

I use it to measure myself against competing sites. I don't use the alex toolbar so my rating is not inflated.

Its not cheating, (it isn't a contest either), its a result of advertising. When ads on gator servers are requested by alexa browsers then gator gets another visitor.

I'm not saying gator isn't a crummy company, but they're hardly cheating alexa.

The following site is quite useful:

Turning Alexa Traffic Rank into Unique Visitors

It is interesting to see the divergence in the figures from the smallest to the largest number of visitors for any rank.

For example, at the moment it appears that sites ranked at around 20,000 have a total daily number of unique visitors that ranges between 200 and 18,000 - with the expected normal number needed for this rank being about 7,000!

My literature site gets over 10,000 uniques a day and I'm not ranked that high.

Hmmm, it should be possible to calculate the number of daily uniques for a given site based purely on it's Alexa rank and the number of daily uniques for the #1 site. Does anyone know the number of global daily uniques for Yahoo? I have not been able to find current stats anywhere.

Alexa is not really that accurate.. One of my site has more traffic than the other but yet it was ranked lower than some of my less traffic sites.

It seems to me that there will a natural bias towards webmaster related sites because webmasters are more likely to have alexa installed. Most people I know who aren't webmasters have never heard of it.

Yep, the Alexa toolbar is a bit biased. For example, I saw one site that had 30,000 uniques a day and an Alex of 30,000. Then I saw a site with 4,000 uniques a day with a ranking of 13,000. The second site was a webmaster site, so I guess webmasters use the toolbar more than "ordinary" net surfers to check their sites, etc...

    Izaak,

I know the NNR but they are monthly uniques, in this case the daily uniques would be more interesting.

How come you cannot just determine what the daily uniques are by calculation and go by the average. So if Yahoo had 30 million uniques for a month then the daily average would be 1 million. I guess I don't understand what is so important about daily unique stats as oppose to monthly...
