Is there a way to build an auction website using wordpress?

It depends on what the site requires, but probably yes. There are lot of themes already made for WP (some free and others for sale) so you might even want to Google something like "WordPress auction theme". The first link I saw with that search linked to AuctionPress, described as "a powerful auction theme that harnesses the power of WordPress ..."
