On page audit throws a rel="canonical" curve ball :-(

Good Morning from -3 Degrees C, still no paths gritted wetherby UK :-(

Following an on page audit one recommendation instructs me to ad:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.barrettsteel.com/" /> on the home page of barrett steel. I'm confused, i thought i only had to add this to duplications
the home page which to my knowledge dont exist.

So my question is please: "Why shoul i ad this snippet of code on the home page of http://www.barrettsteel.com <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.barrettsteel.com/" />

    Any insights welcome :-)
I have had a perfectly wonderful
    evening, but this wasn't it-

It does no harm to include a canonical on every page. You might find that you have some links pointing to www.barrettsteel.com, some to www.barrettsteel.com/index.htm and some to barrettsteel.com ... depending on whether you're using mod_rewrite or mod_alias and what setup you've got, you might find that those could all be resolved separately rather than being visibly redirected to a single format, in which case you would have duplicate content, even if you had not intended it to come out that way.
