    The best free FTP-client??

    Hi,

I've been using WS_FTP_LE for a while, it works fine and all that, but one thing about it really bugs me: The connection times out in 300 seconds. I have tried to find a way to keep the connection alive, but either I'm stupid/ignorant/a combination of the two, or it doesn't exist.

Are there any other free FTP-clients out there that you've tested and found better thatn WS? If so, I'd really like to know, so I don't have to test them for a couple of weeks each, before I find one I like...

Do a search for FTPComm and Freeware on Google. I wouldn't say it's better than what you are using at the moment but I like it.

    Thanx,

Some of the things I'm really looking for in an FTP-client is speed, stability, customizability and the ability to maintain a connection more than 300 seconds...

    I'm very happy with Filezilla - http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla

It has a keep alive feature, but I haven't really explored that, so I'm not sure if it's what you want, but it's worth a try.

most of the time I think it's the host that disconnects you rather than the FTP client...

Personally I like ws_ftp since its a no frills program, doesn't have a whole bunch of stuff I won't ever use/need

Is it the host that disconnects? Well that explains something. But I also have a program called WebNotepad (excellent program by the way). It has an FTP-function, and it is able to keep a connection alive, much longer than WS. Otherwise I agree with you. WS-FTP is great, and excactly for that reason. It doesn't have a bunch of stuff I don't need.

That is why I also like WebNotepad so much by the way...

    LeechFTP is da biz-omb...

I'd also say that it's likely the host that disconnects you.

Smart FTP is great! I also like Dreamweaver's built-in FTP support, saves me a lot of time!

Is there anything I can do to keep the connection alive?

Or make the host keep the connection alive? 300 seconds isn't an awful lot, and sometimes I upload the page, check it, make some changes and when I want to upload it again, the connection is closed. Really annoying to have to go through the connection process every time I want to upload. Lots of time wasted...

    Thanx for good anwers though...

Yeah I think SmartFtp rocks. Tried a few different ftp programs but SmartFtp is by far the best one I've used so far.

WSFTP and CuteFTP were the first 2 I downloaded, but I ended up using SmartFTP ( http://www.smartftp.com/ ). It's free, but probably shouldn't be. I will gladly donate when I have some extra cash as it has served me faithfully for a couple years now.

The only feature I really want them to add is automatic CHMOD settings for my .cgi files. That would save me another minute or two. It has been posted as a request on their message board.... hopefully they get it added.

As far as the connection goes, it's probably your host. Same thing happens to me with SmartFTP with one host, but not with another host. It is very annoying.

    Hey,

Thanx guys, you've been a real help. Seems like my problem remains. But I will try to switch to SmartFTP. Seems like it receives the widest acclaims

Is it possible to ask my host to extend the time I can be idle with my FTP program? Do they usually do that?

    Thanx again!

I use SmartFTP also and love it, but I also keep FTPCommander installed and use that on occasion. It's very lightweight in comparison.
