    Lightbulb Inspiration

I know this may sound like an odd question, but where do most of you get your inspiration for designs? I seem to find myself at a loss for a design at the moment, when ever I draw one up I'm not happy with it.

Or, I look at different web design companis, and there portfolios. Something always sparkes me for a design idea.

As well as the obvious ways like http://www.wowwebdesigns.com/ http://www.coolestdesigns.com
    http://www.thebestdesigns.com/ http://www.cwd.dk/
    http://www.coolhomepages.com/ http://www.designpicks.com/

Sometimes when I have the time I go through the web designers category and click on every third listing in the DMOZ directory for a letter. This way I see what the pro designers are doing for their own sites as well as for their client's sites and work.

Also I take notice of design trends in magazines, clothes, tv ads, tv shows, furniture and see if the priciple idea can be addapted to my sites, banners, print ads or brochures.

I also do what billiousness does and I love browsing in CD shops and looking at the jazz cd covers. I get heaps of ideas from these.

I know this isnt what you really wanna hear...

but alot of great artists DONT get their inspiration from the same thing they are trying to design.

I've found myself getting inspiration from my surrounding, shapes and colors of buildings, Television...

I've even once gotten a layout for a clients site by looking in the Newspaper and seeing an ad for a Salon....

    very odd....

But I agree that coolhomepages.com is a great place.

You can try my site if ya want, you'll see in my gallery that alot of my stuff takes on different inspirations.

    Re: Inspiration

I find that my sites tend to evolve over time so it might be quite to my liking but something else always occurs to me as I'm doing it. The criteria for my latest site was fast speed of download which limited me to what I could do. Anyway, I hope you find some inspiration soon and good luck with it.

    Duplicate threads merged.

Like billiousness and jnicklo, I have a tendancy to look at things around me, particularly magazines. I find that the interior decorating ones are great for colour scheme ideas. Interior designers have a tendancy to mix and match colours and styles that the average person wouldn't even dream of.

Whilst I often see other sites that catch my eye, I don't intentionally go looking at them for inspiration.

Thanks all for the input, I'm glad most of you correctly interpeted my question, I wasn't just limiting it to web pages that inspire but also other things, lately I've been looking at some of the local historcal architecture for insiration, I think I may have an idea, but just need to run it through the word processor.

The interior design idea was great, hadn't thought of that. I think I may pick up a magazine and do exactly that.

I by no means want to end the thread yet. Me being a newbie designer, I'm always looking for new inspirations.

    Thanks,

    Doug

I think that the most important thing about any design is that it be appropriate for the subject matter, so that's where I get a lot of my ideas. Sometimes that can be really hard though. I recently designed a site for an academic research project on tobacco policy. I tried all sorts of things that were sort of smoking-inspired without being too obvious about it. That didn't work out so well so I ended up going with a colour scheme based on the flags of the four countries involved (CAN, USA, AUS, GBR).
