illustrator - weaving a pair of lines

Anyone know the way to weave a pair of orderly solid lines (think of a thickly cabled rope)

There are two colors, and the front/back should show revealed/hidden as they realistically would.

    Using what tools & sequence?

Jeez Louise. You might have to do it in pieces, because I'm sure you've already discovered that if an object is above another one, the WHOLE object would be on top.

I have used this method to create a rope/cable before and it works quite well.
It's great because once it's a brush in Illustrator you can use it anytime!
