Need help. Mysql won't connect to 'localhost'

I'm on win xp home and have installed and am running apache 1.3.23 and php 4.1.1. I installed mysql and ran mysqld-max-nt and tried to configure admin options. it says that it can't connect to 'localhost''on port 3306 so I go into mysql.ini and change the port to 8080 and it still says can't connect to localhost and yeah apache is running at the time. I did it before and can't bloody remember how. Can someone help please?
    Thanks
    Erik

Instead of "localhost" try connecting to "127.0.0.1" See if that works... If not let me know and someone will help you troubleshoot.

Nada. I wonder what could be wrong? I renamed and moved the .cnf to my.ini and to the C:\Windows directory as per Kev's book. Everything else works, why not this?

WEll here's what I've tried. I've renamed the my.ini to my.cnf and plunked it into my C:\ I went and changed the httpd.conf file to port 3306. didn't work. I telneted to localhost 80 and got a response. But for the life of me I can't get firggin' mysql to run. HELP PLEASE. This is driving me insane, loopy up the wall. I don't get it. I HATE when I follow a books instructions and it STILL doesn't work. I'm at my wits end. I just had several great ideas for applications that I can build and sell but I can't do that cuz I can't get damn MySQL to work properly.
    Help, please
    Erik

Try a "Ctrl-Alt-Del" and see if mysql_nt is running under processes... If it isn't running there that means that it hasn't even started up (which would be why you can't connect).
If it is under processes, then there is something wrong with the way you are connecting.

I fixed it! YAY! I forgot to run winmysqladmin.
I use mysql-front. What you think? Now if there was only an easy way to shut it down (w/o ctrl-alt-del)
    Thanks gang
