I was just thinking: it would be kinda nice if we could have a chatroom here. For interested individuals... Is that a possibility at all?

    hi,

I think it would be quite a good idea but it may cause people to stop posting questions in the forums and only in the chat room for an instant reply.

It also casues a big strain on the server although this probably isn't a problem here as they proably have a very high badwidth.

yeah, but its not guaranteed that someone will be in the chat room at all times, so people will still go to the forum. Besides, they could have scheduled chat sessions like site reviews and stuff where people can debate the design issues in real-time...

anyone else thinks that chat would be a good idea?

Scheduled chats would probably be a really great feature to add to the site if there is the bandwidth for it. Open chatrooms tend to sit empty unless you have a site geared towards general socialization.

We could probably arrange scheduled chats, and have them hosted by a 3rd party. There are several companies out there that offer "free chat hosting".

I would say schedule one or two chat nights a week, preferably on nights when most people are at home (i.e. Wed. and Sat.).

Since some people will be looking for real-time general socialization, and others looking for real-time help on certain subjects, it might help to have a schedule similiar to this:

7:00 - General Chat (Get the room warmed up)
8:30 - Specific Subject (Pick a hot topic)
9:00 - Specific Subject (Another hot topic)
9:30 - General Chat (Cool down with a beanbag to relax and some friedly people to talk to!)

    Just an idea!

I'd be up for that but you'd need some tight administration because of the GRQ factor...
    >$$$$ has entered the room.
    >$$$$: DO YOU SURF THE INTERETNET? DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN GET PAID FOR IT? NOW YOU CAN! JUST GO TO ALLADVANTAGE.COM/HOME.ASP/REFID=GOQ591 NOW!!!!

Repeat inifitum (i.e. keep repeating that until the chat server locks up)

But I'd definitely be up for a chat...it'd ake it much easier for people to get to know eachother since we're all so cool.

Anybody want to take it upon themselves to investigate different third-party chat hosting options that we could use?

Idea: Put together a "review crew" so-to-speak. Like you said, have them investigate the different possibilities and then report each of their findings to you.
This will give you multiple points of view and, consequently, a better idea of which way to go.

If you do the "review crew" thing I am more than willing to help out!

    hi,

I looked a while back for chat hosted by a third-party that was free. Although I found many non actually allowed moderation unless you paid for a better version.

    Hi,

I have found that everyone lets you have moderated chat hosted by them. It has banners ads though but it is the only one I have found.

I have contacted Jonese via AOL IM and submitted the idea of using the chat feature at Delphi http://www.delphi.com

They have a very good service and it allows for some great moderation features.

I use everyone.net and I think their services are great... The only "problem" with the chat is that it goes through another discussion form, but I am sure there is a way to get around that.

Isn't there a program that people could run on there PC's using a third party server allowing them to chat with others on the same webpage? Even ICQ (the perpetual alpha/beta of software) has ICQSurf (still in Alpha) that has these capabilities. Northsky.com offers a instant messaging client that is supposed to have these features as well. The client from Northsky.com can even be skinned with a Sitepoint.com look and feel.

What if we use alternate operating systems? We'd need to be sure that everyone could use the chat because I'm sure there are people using Be (me for one), Linux (I know RAGE and I), Win2k (some internet programs don't work on NT...).

Can somebody give me a status report on how this idea is coming along? Or has it died off?

Well considering that the last real thing that happened around this topic was on the 26...I think it's died down almost all the way.

But I'm sure everyone would love if someone wanted to take on the task of finding a chat program.

I hope somebody comes up with something, I'd love to see this idea put into effect...I think it would generate a big response right off the bat, and would wind the community even tighter.

I'm up for it. Although I am not sure about this Wed and Sat nights thing that "everyone" is home. Come on...you must go out SOMETIME?
I am usually on on Sat if it is very late ie 3am or something.

Another thing to take into consideration is time, you lot in the states will be on a different time to us in the UK. I don't mind chatting during the day but on weekdays I can't really chat dead late at night as I do actually sleep!

Why don't we all just connect to a certain EFNET (or DALnet, etc.) server and talk in #sitepoint? It would be really easy and a great Windows IRC client named mIRC is available at www.mirc.com .

    But I've gathered a few chat sites and scripts. http://www.tectonicdesigns.com/chat/index.html http://ralfchat.de/ http://www.prowler-pro.com/jabberchat/ http://www.everysoft.com/everychat/ http://www.sonic.net/~nbs/unix/www/freechat/ http://www.zonecoaster.com/shop/?c=F...t_Version_2.00

P.S. Those links are thanks to CGI-Resources.com.

This is only a basic chat applet, but can be useful. www.thegovernment.com offers you a free chat room and a bunch of other remotely hosted services without ads.
