Must have been a coincidence, but I was going to ask the same question.
On a side note, does vBulletin seem to be the best forum available now, or what would you recommend if someone was to start a new forum that expects moderate traffic?
Well it only makes sense for SP to get their money's worth and use UBB for awhile longer, assuming that they purchased a yearly lease.
vBulletin does seem like the logical choice. Most of us won't even know the difference, and it does keep within the site's focus of PHP rather than Perl, I've only used vBulletin sparingly but it does seem faster (and cheaper).

I swear that somebody is spying on my email We were discussing the possibility of using vBulletin several weeks ago because of its security and speed enhancements.
I know nothing about vBulletin but I know for sure that the current state of UBB on SitePoint really decreased my visits to the board (I mean that ugly search functionality).

I have been wondering a lot about UBB over the last couple days...it can't make it much longer written in Perl...I've used their new board, OpenTopic, a little bit before, but it seems sort of bulky and cumbersome...what's it written in? Isn't it some other lesser-known programming language? Either way I think that vBulletin and other forums written in other languages have a big chance to overtake UBB's dominance if "InfoPop" does take a big leap forward with OpenTopic.

Also according to TWF members, it's a non-issue to upgrade UBB->VB.
I added up the total number of posts in these forums and it adds up to 6803, less than 1/10th of the posts it takes UBB to become slow. There are probably more posts actually because I assume the admins of the board and the site have a private forum...

Eric, I thought I noticed the forum post numbers were a little lower than before. That's probably why...
I say go for vBulletin personally because from what I've read it looks very cool and is a one-click upgrade from UBB. I hope our usernames and profile are kept intact though, as well as the (excellent) color theme.
If I'm not mistaken the upgrade is so easy a 4-year old child could handle it...quick! Somebody go get Matt a 4-year old child! (old Marx brothers joke) http://www.baseballboards.com recently moved from UBB to vBulletin and I think it's a significant improvement. Their boards don't look as sharp now, but that's a lack of customization on their part. Those boards get more posts than you can imagine, yet vBulletin is running just fine there...quicker than before, IMO.
Let's face it, SitePoint will be dumping Perl eventually, so why not now?

Before a riot starts let me bring my SP view's into this
1. We are considering going to VBulletin in the near future
2. We have a lot on our plate that we nned to fnish first.
3. As long as the forums are operational and hummng then it will not be ranked as a top of the list priority (but it's up there trust me!)
Keep the comments rolling in though cause we do read them and make notes, lots of post-it's are sitting on my desk
I really like the look and features of vBulletin but *only* hope that when SitePoint transfers to this new forum, my user name and stats will remain the same...and I won't have to re-register under another name!

vBulletin lite is available for downloading now. Has anyone tried it yet?
I just downloaded it and tried running the install.php file and it said "You are not running PHP - please...". Don't know why I got this because other PHP pages have previously ran on my site. I then tried writing the phpinfo page and ran that and all I got was a blank page. Does this definately mean PHP is not running any more.
The phpinfo page i wrote was :
<HTML>
<BODY>
<?php
phpinfo()
?>
</BODY>
</HTML>
Anymore ideas folks?

That would not be necessary to do because it will import all data necessary to make a smooth transition.
I just visited the board that TWTCommish mentioned is running vBulletin. Wow, I have never seen a large board move with such speed! I can't wait for it to arrive here!
It did load very fast, especially since the topic listing for the Major League Baseball forum took up 3 pages when you set it to display "Last Day". Twenty-Two Thousand plus posts and it was as fast if not faster than the forums here.
