lost mysql passwd

I want to add a db to my mysql server, but have misplaced the root password for the mysql server (I know my regular root password)...

Is there a way to recover or clear the password? I read on the mysql.org site there's a function to clear the grants/revokes, but I can't find anything about lost passwords.

I have currently one database and one user, so it's no problem to reinstate the permissions for the user, I just don't want to go through installing it again.
