Hm.. It's already 2 months into 2000 and the article about the best of '99 is still displayed prominently on the main page. If not new articles, at least move the link to that one off the front.
bgotty,
Don't worry about it. while yes some webmasters might be put off by such a thread matt enjoyed it and like he always says. "This site is for you!"

Well I for one would like to see an article or tutorial on PHP. I vistit WR at least once a day but normally several times. I don't expect new content, but there are so many articles and reviews here already, they keep me occupied. I suppose when I get through them all, which I suppose I almost have, I might get a little frustrated.
But dont worry this site is, in my opinion, the best webmaster site of its kind.
I'd love a PHP article though. My host provides PHP3 for me but I'm not sure how to use it best, also I havent learnt it yet. I am using ssi at the moment and wonder if I can use php in a similar way to ssi along with all its other great features (which I am not 100% aware of yet). I know that you can include a file in php but I think it has to be in the same directory as the page.
Anyway a php article - thats what I want

I just started coming back to WR after long being gone from it to learn PHP3 and MySQL.
My thought isn't as big as the others here, but I think the "Javascript, Perl, PHP, ASP, MySQL, Coldfusion, Carwashing, Auto Repair, Shopping, Babysitting, Computer Repair" forum is just a little large and spans too many topics. Scanning the site for information leads to all kind of "falsies" when looking for something relating to "this or that" in php, and seeing tons of "this and that" messages, only to find that they're about "this and that" in perl, asp, astrology, moonwalking, etc.
Maybe they can be broken up into their seperate forums?
Just my two cents (maybe I should get change?)

My new position : Target for Middle Management Hostility.
We all know Matt has been busy working on a new series of sites so that is one reason. My question is this-
Since a lot of the people that frequent here run similar sites that they wish to be popular why not post more of their articles. If they are given a list of formatting requirements and a maximum article length then I am sure you can find a lot of new content.
LuZeR is very knowledgable in PERL so he could write an article on PERL tips or how to debug your scripts easily.
mmcue just finished learning PHP and they say that the best way to learn is by teaching. How about a couple of articles?
There are others who frequent this site also. Or how about asking other webmasters if you can use a couple of their articles? I know Matt has a few articles at www.siteexperts.com. He could ask them if he can post a couple of articles here.. Especially the ones about using XML, XSL, CSS and ASP (hint hint hint) here.
I am working on my new site which while it won't be so much like this site, I would think it would be complimentary. Once I get the site online then I will be willing to submit a couple of articles (see there I go just volunteering myself for more work).
If everyone just gave back a little then this site would never be lacking and you could quite possibly get some traffic for your own site.

I've only been a visitor to Webmaster Resources for the last few months but I have noticed that updates are getting fewer and further between. As I run a similar site I can sympathise - whilst I try to add new content weekly, sometimes you just get side-tracked by other site improvements, or other projects.
My site (Ethos Online) is no where near as big or as visited as WR, but one thing I have noticed is that if you can't find the time to write something yourself, syndicate someone else's. I've had great responses from my visitors to syndicated articles I published simply because I didn't have time to write things myself - this is especially the case with articles by Jennifer Johnson from http://www.promotingyoursite.com/
Just pile it high. The world is big and the web is big too, so the chances that the majority of visitors will have read your syndicated articles elsewhere is slim - so don't worry about that!
I'm not an authority on web writing - but I've been told some of my articles are good. If you want to use any of them let me know. My site is at http://www.ethosonline.com/
So in short - SYNDICATE!
That's my two PENCE (I'm British y'see).

joseph jaminet: Webmaster-Resources.com is my job. It's only source of income. I had a content liscencing deal with HitBox.com a while back, hence the reason for some of my work being on their site.
wluke's idea that some of the more knowledgable people in these forums write tutorials about PHP, PERL, etc. is excellent.
So how can we go about submitting articles? Do we have to be accredited in some way? I've noticed a lot of contributors are marketing specialists and such..
What are the requirements?

1. You know what you're talking about (no "blind leading the blind" articles)
2. You can explain yourself well -- this includes following the rules of grammar.
3. The article isn't self promotionional
4. It's of value to people who visit Webmaster Resources
5. The subject/topic hasn't been covered in another article on this site
Matt: I've written you an email some time ago with proposal for posting my article on WR. It was once published in WebReference so I thought that you haven't replied because of this, but in the rules above there's no rule that it should be original. So, what do you think ?
That seems like a very fair and sensible method. But if you only want articles that haven't been published elsewhere, why do you print so many of Jennfier Johnson's articles? Is it because they appeared on WR first? Just curious, that's all.
Great site by the way. You deserve a Webby award.

Matt: Although I am a frequent visitor to your site and I like it a lot, but when submitting articles I need to look to the things I can get from it and in WebRef I get some software for articles and also a wider exposure. Sorry but this world is made this way. Everybody wants to get something for their efforts, I think you too
have you eveer thought about the non-tangiable things? like exposure to your site, name recognition <sp?>,and the satisfaction of knowing you've possibly reached someone you might not have reached before?
also matt gives full credit for submitted stories. this includes:
* Name
* email address
* website URL
* short bio (at times)
i know i've visited the sites of those that have submitted articles and i hope that when i submit and article or two that you will all do thee same thing.

I haven't seen any of Jennifer Johnsons articles on WebDeveloper.com, WebReference.com, Builder.com or WebMonkey.com so I published them.
I'm willing to accept articles that *have* been published elsewhere, it's just that if another huge site that competes against this one publishes it first, and I publish it after them, it makes Webmaster-Resources.com seem like a copycat.
Also, in most cases the people who visit this site also visit the other sites that I mentioned above. There's little point in presenting the same content to them here.
I fully understand and support your point, exposure was actually the main reason why I submitted an article to WebRef. They have 5x more subscribers to newsletter and also more visitors to the site than WR. However if I ever have time to write more articles and there will be no strong reason to publish it elsewhere I promise to submit it to WR first
