Question The best search engines - what makes them tick?

I am getting rather tired of keeping track of which search engine/directory notices which form of content to rate your site. (meta tags? description? domain name?) What do the big ones (Google, Altavista, DMOZ, Hotbot, etc.) notice the most? What makes them tick? How can I optimize my pages for each one in particular?

Google and AV are nearly identical now.

    Hotbot uses Inktomi.

SEO is constantly changing, much to the chagrin of many. You just have to pay attention to who's providing results to who, who's changing their policies, etc. I suggest SearchEngineWatch.com for a good newsletter that'll keep you up-to-date.
