    free search engines?

My site uses the free version of Atomz & I'm coming up to 500 pages - they start to charge lots after 500.

I've checked out PicoSearch & FreeFind search - both are very good but for the logo by the search box or the advertising on the results page.

Does anyone know of other similar free search engines with 1000+ page limit & minimal advertising.

You may be wondering why I don't just pay for an ad free engine - me too. I've checked out the prices & they come to more than my yearly hosting!

Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Thanks.

Maybe you can become a "guinea pig" for Gigablast.com? :-)

Hmm...have you considered putting together your own search functionality? I only did a cursory search, and found this quick and dirty javascript version:

    http://javascript.internet.com/misce...te-search.html

And i'm sure there are different, and more robust customizable solutions out there (that allow for more result descriptors, rankings, etc).

    Just an idea

Thanks for the suggestions above - neither of which I had considered.

I'll get in touch with Gigablast to see what they say.

As I've got a plain html site, I thought it wasn't an option to develop my own search engine - will certainly look at this.

I have also been toying with the idea of having two search boxes - two accounts with Atomz - one for the main part of the site & the other with the articles section - 280+ pages. Wouldn't look very professional & visitors will have to do 2 searches & I'll still have the problem when the articles get to 500. Still an option at the moment though.

Thanks Marc. This looks like a strong contender. The script description looks excellent - just what's needed. Better than FM SiteSearch Lite that I've been looking at. They also have an auto installer to make it all easy - seemingly.

Not personally or anything, but I've used their products in the past. They have my recommendation.

    Yes - it looks excellent.

I've got it up & running & will certainly use it if I can sort out the 'description' of each page found - it gives the meta tags & as I use a template - one for 480 pages - with the same meta tags - then the description is pretty redundant. I need to find out how to change this so that it ignores the meta tags & gives the first few lines of the page text. If you've got any ideas....

There's a discussion forum at the site which I shall try.

Please ignore the above problem (?) - it wasn't - I just deleted the page description & put in the 'examples' of terms used. Seems to cover everything. So far so good.
