How did they get on top???

I have been reading the sitepoint forums and articles on seo for the past month, and recently submitted my site www.blisswebmedia.com to all the places suggested by Aspen at the top of the thread. I have spent about $500 on express submissions.

It has been about 2-3 weeks now and I have only been indexed in MSN, Hotbot and Altavista, but am NOT in the top 3 pages for my optimized phrase "web design melbourne".

What I don't understand is how did these guys, www.rkp.com.au, get into the first 3 pages of Alltheweb, AltaVista, AOL, "Google", Lycos Pro, MSN and Yahoo for that keyword phrase!!

From what I can see they don't have much keyword density, their link popularity in Google isn't all that, and they don't appear to have paid their way up through sponsorship! What are they doing, that i am not???

    You might check for cloaking.

Spoof the User Agent and then request the webpage. I think Opera will let you do this. Just change the User Agent to like the User Agent Google uses and then load that page, if it's cloaked you'll get something differn't then what you usually get.

I heard that cloaking isn't the best way to get to the top - something about if search engines find out, your site is banned forever? Or is that just an old wives' tale...

In any case, I'm happy, got ranking of top 5 at Google for 3 of my major keywords... don't ask me how it's done, coz I have no idea

Maybe Google are honest people after all and place the relevant links at the top?

Rahula, "web design melbourne" is probably a fairly popular search term, therefore getting to the top is probably fairly difficult. What you should do is go for PPC at Overture.com or use Google AdWords and don't forget to submit to DMOZ...

    AOL uses Google

    Lycos uses Fast

    Hotbot uses Inktomi

MSN uses overture, then looksmart, then inktomi

As for how did they get in the first 3 pages? Its not hard. Your terms are not that competitive.

Wait until you get in Google - it can take as long as 7 weeks.

Aspen, you're right I should probably exercise some patience and wait 'til I get into Google. But I have paid for express inclusions into yahoo, Inktomi, (ask jeeves) Tehoma, and still am not showing up for those keywords. I know that I have been indexed in Altavista, Hotbot, and MSN, but am not ranked in the top 10 pages for my targeted keywords.

You say "web design melbourne" should be fairly easy to get a top ranking for, than why I am failing?! I have put in days of effort in seo, following the advice of Sitepoint gurus!

MSN top results are from overture(PPC)

As for the other engines, just wait a while, you'll get up there, you need reciprocal links to rank high.

You sure that msn top results are from "overture ppc"?

www.rkp.com.au is ranked number 1 in MSN for "web design melbourne". I went to overture and submited a search there with the same phrase and they are not in the first page! I went to their ppc section to see the top 3 competitors for "web design melbourne", and they were not one of them either!

Another point that seems to go against your hypothesis: For the same key phrase "web design melbourne" - weboloy.com.au are number one in Overture, they have the highest bid for those keywords, but are NOT in the first page of MSN!!

By the way...No one has had a stab at answering the initial question of this thread: "How did they get on top?"

    www.rkp.com.au

What did they do to be in the in the top 3 of all the major search engines for the key phrase "web design melbourne"?!!

    They didn't do anything special.

As you say, they're in the top 3 pages for a rather unpopular search phrase. Thats not at all difficult to get - if you just submit and don't do anything else you'll get that. Just wait.

They have a PR of 5, just link exchange with a few web hosting resource sites and you'll beat them.

I got the #1 for "Albino" without even targetting it on google.

    Thanks guys,

I guess I'll just have to wait a couple more weeks. I will ecstatic if i can be where they are ranked! I have already submitted to a number of web design directories, hopefully that will increase my link popularity.

I will keep you guys posted on how I go.

3 reasons why these guys are tops

RKP are currently showing no 2 for google " web design melbourne" here are some reasons why there may be more

    keywords in title
    <title>RKP Web Design - Melbourne Australia</title>

    matching keywords on page

"RKP Web Design is a Melbourne, Australia, based web site design and development group"

22 backward links show " web design" in anchor or near anchor text matched against page titles .

you should be able to bump them with a little effort.
