To greyscale or not - How to

Hi All

I wish to take a coloured picture and convert it to single colour but leave the background as it is (in this case white). Exactly the same principle as converting to greyscale, but being able to set the colour of the greyscale.

I have looked everywhere in Adobe Photoshop 6, but cannot find how to do it.

Any advice would be welcome.

Have you used the image >> adjustments >> desaturete?

Youu could just save it as a 2 colour image if you just want black and white

I have finally found how to do this after many hours od messing.

Fist convert to greyscale.

Then to DuoTone.

It works fine for what I want.

The easy way to do is Image > Mode > Greyscale then make all the things you want

Personally, I use the Image > Adjust > Channel Mixer. Set it to a monochromatic and you can go ahead and readjust t5o the shade of gray you want. It should preserve the background if it's white anyways.

I use Image > adjust > desaturate and then I use Image > adjust > Gadient map.

It uses the for and background color but if you click the color bar ( in the new option window that opens ) then you can choose other colors.

if you want to set the color of your greyscale.. select the parts you want to b&w , make a new layer, color with grey - black whatever according to your needs and fill. change the blending to color - voila

This might be even quicker:
Image->Adjust->Hue/Saturation->Colorize
Then adjust the Hue, Saturation and Lightness to get the color you want.
