    Me? A Dmoz Editor?

Yep, I just signed up and got accepted. An obscure category probably nobody here would care about. I've noticed one other person on this board mentioning that he's a Dmoz editor. Anyone else?

I've had that problem with site's I've submitted to them. I was actually very surprised by the speedy response and acceptance to being an editor.

I hope being an editor will help me figure out what it takes to get a site accepted. The category I'm editing is one that I don't really have any sites to add to, but do have a hobby-related interest.

I used to be an editor. Archbob is (or was an editor). A few meta editors, including one high ranking one (kcipton) sometimes come here.

The best thing about being an editor is being able to check the status of your submissions.

Go to your bookmarks and act like you're going to add the site, when the editorial page comes it it'll list any previous transactions involving that site and editor's notes.

Thanks for the tip, there's so much info in the editor's section I don't know if I'd have ever found that one out.

Just attempted to become an editor for a smaller section, and after I hit "Submit" from the page where you fill out your personal details, provide URL's, etc, I get pushed to a page for "editor reinstatement"... I've never been an editor, and attempting to fill the form out invariably returns a "you've never been an editor" page...

    Help? *L*

It did that to me too. PITA because I didn't save what I had typed in the form and when I hit the 'back' on the browser it was all gone, so I had to start over.

Just be sure you find the radio button where you select whether you're a new editor or returning editor.

Whomever designed that form overlooked the fact that probably most of the people applying are new editors and the default should be new. Or, maybe they were trying to send a message.

Good luck in your application, btw.

    Strange thing.

I was an editor until I read this thread. After reading it, I decided to log on and check out my section. I tried logging on and it didn't work a couple of times. I looked at the public view of my category and it said that it needed an editor (which meant I was kicked out). I applied for reinstatement and it tells me that my username never existed.

This must mean that the last 9-10 months that I have been editing this particular category have been a dream and that all the changes I have made, and which are still visible, were magically done by elves.

Oh well, good riddance. You know what I've learned about DMOZ? Humans really don't do it much better that the Google spyder does.

I'm an editor too, and a meta. I hang around here mostly to answer questions about dmoz. (I probably won't answer questions about specific listings, though - that could turn into a full-time job.)

Chul1ss1mo, you're still an editor. Your name fell off the category view because of a bug when the cat you edit was moved in the big Business reorg lately. I've sent you an email via your dmoz profile with some suggestions on how to get the problem fixed if you want to stay as an editor.

Jeremy, when you apply you should get an automatic message which you'll need to reply to (to make sure the email adress you supply is valid). If you don't get that one, try using another email account. Good luck!

Welcome, petertdavis! That information overload feeling sounds familiar. Feel free to email me (preferably using my editorside profile at http://dmoz.org/editors/profile.cgi?editor=hildea ) if you've got questions.

I applied once. They responded with a rejection email.

I was also a bit noobish at that time...so I guess they did the right thing. Plus, I didnt know dmoz was the core of google...i thought it was just another itsy bitsy directory that claims to be big.

Thanks! Though, you may regret making that offer, lol. I've already been talking to the editor who's worked the most in the area I'm editing. He may appreciate if I pester someone else with all my questions.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear that. Perhaps the category you applied to wasn't 'needy' enough? I've already deleted several porn redirects out of 'my' category. Those pornsters are so obnoxious!

I am editor too! I also applied, and got, greenbusting rights to my superior category but I had to give up as I could not manage to get the totals down without getting some *serious* help from the editors in the other sub-cats. IN any case, I regularly check my own section and occasionally - perhaps once every three weeks or so - someone puts a site forward for inclusion (invariably it is the wrong category but sometimes I am surprised). I also spend some time looking around for other sites for inclusion, but mine is quite a specialised field and so I don't often come across new ones. Still, it is good to check.

Overall I would say that being an editor is a nice pastime and when I have got involved in the larger community people have been more than friendly. Others have highlighted their problems with it, but my experience has been great!

Yea, I understand about the wrong-category submissions now. I also realize that in the past I had submitted sites to the wrong category. The category structure is starting to make sense to me now.
One of the things that confused me in the past about which category to submit to was that there are a lot of sites already in that are listed in the wrong category. I used to search for competitor's sites, and submit to the category they were listed in, but if they were in the wrong category, then I would be submitting wrong too.

It was the Christian Chat & Community section. 23 listings, and many of the major ones were ommitted (so in my submission I included them).

Hmm, I'm not sure which one you mean?

Is that the one? Maybe not, since there's 63 listings, not 23.
