    right and left columns

    Not sure if this is the best solution for this page (UN and PW: guest). Each header has to start to the right of the image so I chose to repeat a container div to hold left and right column divs. IE 5 and 6 won't recognize the divs so they just spew down the page (IE 6 large top image starts way down - not sure why). And, I need to add about 4 more images down the page.

    Thanks so much in advance!

    IE5?! Wow, that's beyond the call of duty. I don't even bother with IE6 any more.

    I wonder what would happen if you removed the right margin from #mainContent and floated it left? That's what I prefer, and it seems to work better with IE6. Don't see why those inner divs would be playing up. Perhaps it's the margin on the left one, so try adding display: inline to those divs (via conditional comments).

    HI,

    You have a number of logic errors in that page.

    First of all in a two column layout you should float both columns and avoid the 3px jog in IE6 and under and it also cures any clearing problems as your content is clearing the right column before it will start.

    Code:
    .twoColFixRtHdr #mainContent {
        /* margin: 0 219px 0 0; the right margin on this div element creates the column down the right side of the page - no matter how much content the sidebar1 div contains, the column space will remain. You can remove this margin if you want the #mainContent div's text to fill the #sidebar1 space when the content in #sidebar1 ends. */
        padding:0px; /* remember that padding is the space inside the div box and margin is the space outside the div box */
        position:relative;

        float:left;
        width:717px
    }
    The other two problems are firstly the double margin bug on floated elements and you need to add display:inline to any floats whose side edge are adjacent to the containing block and have margins specified on the side.

    The other problem is that .lcol is 244px wide but you have an image that is 224px wide inside a p element that has 70px horizontal padding making it much too big.

    If you make that add up correctly then you can remove the negative margin you applied to your imnage to try and make it fit.

    Try something like this:

    Code:
    .lcol {
      margin:0 0 0 25px;
        padding:0;
        width:244px;
        float:left;
        display:inline
    }
    .lcol p{padding:0 10px!important;}

    .lcol img {
        margin:5px auto 12px 0;
        padding:0;
        float:left;
    }

    Thanks! Got the large image on top to work - thank you both. However, IE 6 and 7 aren't displaying the maincontent bg img now - no yellow right column. See screenshot.

    Paul, I can't see how not to use a negative left margin on the right column so I can reduce the space between the img and text.

    Still missing something though b/c the container holding each img and text next to it -- #columncont -- isn't displaying the yellow bg on any browser.

    And, IE 5 and 6 still spewing the info down and body bg starting to repeat. I just uploaded the changes.

    The code I gave above is fully working based on your original site.

    Luckily I still have it here:

    This is working in IE6. I will not test IE5 as that is just a step too far for sanity.

    Code:

                        <p>Horses have always been vital to Karen. Her experiences with horses are rich and diversified. She grew up riding horses and has been a trail guide, riding teacher, and ranch hand. In the mid 70’s Karen graduated from an English riding academy and went on to study with several professional trainers. Equine facilitated learning (EFL) combines Karen’s love for horses and experiential learning to help people come to a deeper awareness of themselves and their lives. </p>
                        <p>She studied for 4 years at The Epona Center in Arizona. After completing the advanced Epona facilitator-training program, Karen sought to further improve her teaching skills. She began a concentrated study of teaching and facilitating at Nierika Sol where self-awareness is a major focus. Karen has over 25 years in a 12-step program and is committed to living the principles of the program. </p>
                        <p>She has developed a workshop specifically designed to support people in recovery where the horses serve as anchors for compassion and acceptance. She has served on the board for the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA), an organization devoted to serving the children and families affected by alcoholism.</p>
                        <p>Karen values the challenge of self-discovery, and the courage it takes to look within for answers. As a result of her extensive and ongoing training, Karen developed a specialized EFL program at Equinection that uses awareness as a guide to self-discovery and personal transformation. She is a dedicated and gifted teacher.</p>

    You don;t need the negative margin if you negate the padding on the p unless you want it further left than it is.

    Remember that when you have two floats you will need to ensure they are cleared either with overflow:hidden on the parent or some other clearing mechanism.

    e.g. your columncount would need to have haslayout (a width perhaps) and then overflow:hidden.

    The same applies for the main container that holds the left and right main floats.

    Huh, okay, copied yours and it works. Looks like the only difference was you commented out the margin in .twoColFixRtHdr #mainContent?

    Only issue now is the yellow bg isn't showing on any browser except IE 5 :-).

    So no need to bother with overflow:hidden or haslayout?

    You can't use an id more than once so use a class and you have it wrong anyway

    Code:
    id="#columncont"
    The hash shouldn't be there

    You will still need a width and overflow:hidden to contain the pairs of floats that you have.

    Another stupid mistake. Okay, changed it to id="class".

    I just discovered the other difference with my CSS and yours. I had changed the lcol and rcol margins to be cleaner with no negative margins. The text is beside image except in IE 5 and 6??

    However, yellow on sidebar still not showing in most browsers.

    Code:
    .lcol {
      	margin:0 0 0 25px;
        padding:0;
        width:224px;
        float:left;
        display:inline;
    	background-color:red;
    }
    .lcol p{padding:0px;}

    .lcol img {
        margin:5px auto 12px 0;
        padding:0;
        float:left;
    }
    .rcol {
        margin:0px;
    	padding:0;
    	width:458px;
        float:left;
    	background-color:pink;
    }
    .rcol ul{
    	list-style-image:url("../images2/bullet-black-disc.gif");
    	list-style-position: outside;
    	font-size:0.813em;
    	color:#330000;
    }
    .rcol li{
    	margin-left:0px;
    }
    .rcol p{
    	margin:0px 10px 12px 0px;
    	font-size:0.7em;
    }
    .rcol h3 {
    	margin:0px;
    	color:#990000;
    	font-size:1.1em;
    }
    I set the overflow:hidden to the parent containers:

    Code:
    #inner{
        width:956;
        background:url(../images2/content-bg.jpg) repeat-y 0 0;
        overflow:hidden;
    }

    .columncont {
        width:710px;
        overflow:hidden;
    }

    Silly mistakes again.

    Code:
    ul#nav-top2 a:focus {
        outline:0;
        color: #650000;
    }
    }
    /* ----- Columns ----- */
    There's an extra bracket above the comments that will corrupt the next rule.

    You also missed the px off 956 but that looks like a cut and paste error here as the site is ok

    Gosh.....argh on the simple mistakes.

    Sorry for the confusion, Paul. I had copied your CSS and HTML and uploaded it and it worked and just copied and uploaded mine after you showed me the stupid mistakes. The yellow on sidebar shows but the image and text next to each other still won't work in IE 5 and 6. Also, the body bg is repeating itself near the bottom.....??

    Fixed the IE 5 and 5 issue. Yea. Now, just the body bg thing. Not sure why it's repeating near bottom?

    BTW The code I posted in post#5 is still fully working in all browsers.

    You seemed to have changed the left column now (lcol) and made an inline image run into an empty p tag.

    Code:
    <div class="lcol"><img src="http://www.charlotteswebservices.com/temp/http-equinection/http/about/images/staff1.jpg" width="224" height="153" alt="kkk" />
                    <p>&nbsp;</p>
                    </div>
    IE hates that and it's what is causing the problem now so remove it.

    Code:
        <div class="lcol"><img src="http://www.charlotteswebservices.com/temp/http-equinection/http/about/images/staff1.jpg" width="224" height="153" alt="kkk" /></p>
    If you want a bigger gap then just add a bottom margin to either the image or .lcol.

    For your body background you would be better off using fixed positioning to avoid the repeat issues.

    Code:
    body  {
        font: 100% "Trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
        background: #666666;
        margin: 0; /* it's good practice to zero the margin and padding of the body element to account for differing browser defaults */
        padding: 0;
        text-align: center; /* this centers the container in IE 5* browsers. The text is then set to the left aligned default in the #container selector */
        color: 805d57;
        background: #873414 url(http://www.charlotteswebservices.com/temp/http-equinection/http/images2/bg.jpg) no-repeat fixed;
    }

    Here is the whole code I was working with.

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

                        </ul>
                        <p>Karen has studied and practiced experiential education for thirty years. Her background and training in experiential arts education is a strong foundation for her work at Equinection. The expressive arts techniques she offers anchor and enrich clients’ experiences.</p>

    I must have fixed the extra <p>&nbsp;</p> right as you were looking at it. I had caught that. Believe it or not.

    Ah....that took care of the bg. It's working in all browsers beautifully now. Thanks Paul!!

    Can I have your brain?

    Any idea why the top image and header bg bar is jumping down in IE 6 on this page (UN and PW: guest)? Fine in every other browser even IE5.

    Its the italic bug in IE6 that stretches the wrapper and breaks the floats.

    Try this fix:

    Code:
    * html p.quote{margin:0 5px 0 0}

    My gosh, IE 5 and 6 and even 7 be gone!

    So interesting b/c I didn't do that on the first page and IE 6 was fine.

    Any clue about the space between the header bg and that top horse pic - happening in IE 5-7?

    You probably need to set the image to display:block to cure the gaps or remove the whitespace from the html.

    Hey Paul, what am I missing? I copied a file that is working perfectly in all versions of IE, and just changed out the photos and text but when I upload the new page, IE6 is still starting the top main image much lower than it should. Don't get it b/c it's the same file and we fixed the italic bug in IE6:

    Code:
    * html p.quote{margin:0 5px 0 0}

    HI,

    I'm not sure why that one has changed but a smaller with for the quote should do the trick.

    Code:
    * html p.quote {
        width:180px;
    }

    Okay, I'll try that.

    Would you use divs to set up this kind of "table"? A little tricky with the rows with bg color.

    If you didn't want the alternate coloured rows then I would have used a definition list as that seems the most semantic for that type of structure.

    However, with the alternate coloured rows then a table is probably the easiest element to use and not that bad semantically as it is a row and column type layout.

    Wow, okay. With a line on the right border of the left column?

    The cell on the left would be a th and the cell on the right a td. Then you would just set th{border-right:1px solid #000}.
