Considering most computers come with old versions of Flash (4.0) on them, it means a lot. These people won't install the new ones. They will deny it because of virus scares and whatnot. Even my computer only has Flash 5 on it and now there is Flash 6.0 to contend with. Personally, I will have to think twice about upgrading because I have never been to a site where I felt benefitted by Flash but that is my personal experience. Think how people who are scared of their computers will feel?

here's my take on this whole issue...not that anybody cares...

    - flash is a great platform for delivery of audio/video/interactive design
    - flash is also almost completely inaccessible to users with alternative/assistive technologies (screen readers, braille displays, etc), not to mention people who, although not suffering any physical/mental disability, just can't or won't have all the necessary plugins etc (or their device doesn't allow for a certain screen res, audio, etc)

now, to say that "all sites using flash are bad" and that we should design for the lowest common denominator, is wrong in my opinion. the two techniques to be used are, imho:

    - design for latest specifications, but ensure that content degrades gracefully (i.e. it still looks ok, and most importantly, is useable, on older/alternative platforms)
    - when using specialised plugins etc such as flash, QT, etc...which cannot be made to degrade gracefully, the best solution is to provide alternative content. however, it should be ensured that all relevant information provided in the "all singing, all dancing" version is presented in an adequate form in the alternative pages. http://www.w3c.org/TR/WCAG10-TECHS/#...de-equivalents

so...to get back to the original djane site (i love that crappy term): wonderful site, shame it doesn't have an (x)html only version which also degrades nicely (all ALT tags are present, use of stylesheets, relative sizing, blah blah blah).

I don't think anyone said flash is evil. The use of flash is much like the use of Quicktime. As long as your users can still use your site, it's fine.
