    My Struggle With Autosubmitters

I'll tell you now that I had to learn this the hard way, as many web designers do. Autosubmitters, while a useful tool, just don't get the job done. You hear ads for software or services that will submit your site to "1 million websites" for a fee; now that's just a bunch of talk. When it comes down to it, there are three reasons why autosubmitters are, for the most part, useless:

    1) They are considered SPAMMING by some search engines, which will eventually blacklist your website.
    2) They usually submit your site to a large number of FFA (free for all) link lists, which will either place you on a mailing list or send you a email ad most of the time. These lists are not ever viewed by visitors either.
    3) They cannot be as category specific as one might hope. An autosubmitter usually will submit your site to a general category if one must be selected. In turn, you lose potential visitors.
    4) They can ruin your chances to resubmit correctly. In my past, I have been unable to update or resubmit a submission due to the fact that my site is already indexed correctly.
    5) They're down right not effective.
    and the list goes on...

If you are needing to submit a site to a few general, non-specific, search engines, an autosubmitter might be acceptable. Even then, however, you need to be careful. My advice to you is to do it by hand. I know it may take a while, but there is no need to submit a website to thousands of indexes by hand. Submit to the larger engines and indexes, then promote in other ways. These include link exchanges, awards, newsletters, and even word of mouth. I'll address these techniques another time. But for now, please heed my warning: "Beware of autosubmitters!"

A while ago some autosubmitted would submit German Porn sites to my English Humor directory over and over. I kept changing the URL, but eventrally I had to make it hidden and require that webmasters email me before they can add their site.

    Geez.

Just submit manually to the big ones, don't worry about the others.
