    If you can't compete on price (and most of the people reading this thread can't compete on price), and if web design is a commodity meaning you also can't compete on product. You need to compete on marketing or on service. Which is what I think Brendan is all about.

    Whatever your situation, if most of my money camed from web development contracts I would not relax. You need to develop some strategy for the future, some focus, a plan. Otherwise you might have your business swept out from under you.

    As far as generalist or specialist.

    Don't forget about those eggs and that basket. I'd feel financial more secure with more businesses or more services than with less.

    I'd feel more secure with 2-3 high quality eggs than 5-20 lower quality ones.

    Being a generalist never made anyone succesful, IMO. Then again, being an uber-specialist may make people succesful, but then when they aren't needed they are redundant. It's a fine line to walk, but I don't think offering 5-10 services will help you be anymore succesful than offernig 2-3 really really well.
