Traffic difference from SE from #7 to #1

I rank #7 on google now for the word "freebies", I'm also 7th on AOL for the term. Now I get about 20 uniques from google a day and 15 or so from aol a day from a #7 ranking. How much do you think I could get from a #1 ranking from that word, would it be almost 7 times as much?
I also rank 10th on netscape and 26th on altavista for that word, but those don't seem to get me anything.

According to my search terms in Overture, you get close to 100% click through if you're number 1, compared to 3% for number 6... for everytime someone searches that term

    0.7% if you're number 13

So I guess being number 1 does make a difference...

but that's just for my listings... don't know if it makes a difference for others

    Hi archbob,

I asked another very experienced SEO who's proven himself in this field that same question, and here is what he said:

A # 1 ranking is worth a 5-10% click thru, I like to subtract 1/2% to 1 % per downward position.. but don't like to go below 1% on the first 10 positions.

    Take care

I wish freebiesplanet would tell me what kind of traffic they got from google, since they have the #1 for my keyword.

traffic is NOT related to position.

You can do more with a quality title than you can with "position". You can put a page in a lower ranking that can out produce a higher ranking with a quality title. I've heard it called, _click me now_ factor. It takes much education to figure out what the differences are between a good title and a poor title. Often that education is done by accident. Try some stuff on pages that are stable and rank well and see if your click factor goes up from month to month.
