I know that there are a couple of companies that are offering freedsl if you guys are interested. All you do is input your phone number and then it will tell you if there is service for you area or not. The service is free because they show you ad banners. I hope it is okay to post these url's (Wayne you can delete them if they are not appropriate)

I heard that this new company was coming out and they beam a signal from a satellite to your home. No Wires(TECHTV)

I have a 56K modem and cable internet is not coming until at least Feburary or March to my exact area of my city. The costs will be tremendous, since there is no competition for cable providers. From what I spend (well, I don't pay the cable bill, my parents do) it would cost almost $100 a month to get cable and Internet. The city an hour away from me has had cable modems for at least two years.....

The best I can get on my connnection is 49300. My parents, who still use AOL,(I don't) get very bad connections sometimes. The worst I have had is either 26400 or 44400. Its really bad and I would love to be able to have a faster connection. Then I could download the newest netscape in under an hour.

So, would it be worth the cost to get cable internet? I pay almost $50 a month for Internet now (that includes my phone bill and ISP, which is not run by the telephone company.)

I could get ASDL, but it would cost me way too much, plus the phone company requires a two year commitment to get either free installation or the router for free.

    Worth it or not?

Only you can answer that Depends how much time you spend online. If you spend a lot of time, yes it is worth it (time is money). If you don't spend alot of time, a 49.3 connection isn't that bad. I used to get 21,600 alot... I had no choice.

Here in Finland there are only few companies, which offer cable connection and the biggest is located at the capital, Helsinki. Same thing with xDSL type of connections, it's available only if you live in a rather big city.

Sure, usually the speed is about 48-50kbps with 56k dial-up and ISDN works like a dream for sure, but we have to pay for every single minute spent online. Nice isn't it? It's always exciting to wait for phonebill, it varies from $200 to $300 for two months.

I wouldn't complain a thing if I would have to pay only a certain amount a month, but no.

With my dial-up, my phone company had a plan for unlimited local service, so I could stay on all day and not incur additional phone charges. My last phone bill for that line charged me a flat rate of about $45 for local calls... then it gave a "value" of those calls of about $550.

I want to get cable internet, but the cable company is going to charge $40 a month for cable subscribers, and $50 for non-subscribers. I am lucky I am a cable subscriber. However, its still a lot of money, and I like the ISP I am using (Mindspring). I hope maybe Mindspring will eventually bring DSL to my area within a year or two. Otherwise, I'll be spending a lot of time at my parent's house when they get Cable Internet sometime next year.

Well, up until yesterday I had 56k dial-up access that usually connected at 52k, which I was very pleased with. Anyway, that was yesterday. Today I connect at 1000000000000k What I'm trying to say is I got DSL installed last night. I'm enjoying it alot! And it's only $39 per month...
