Just wondering what Operating Systems you guys have used before.
I have usedUL TYPE=SQUARE>
Windows 95/98 (5 years total)
DOS (4 years)
Windows 3.1 (4 years, and yes I learned Win95 before I played with 3.1)
Linux (Hardly at all, I installed it half a year ago)
BeOS (2 months)

I know this won't help too much, but I was just curious what you people use. Post everything you have guys!
It's late, I forgot to includeUL TYPE=SQUARE>
MacOS (starting with 6.7, ending with 9.3...starting in 1993)
Windows NT (1 year)
whatever TI computers run on (1.5 years)

C64 - 3 years

MSX-DOS - one year

AmigaOS - one year

DOS - 7 years

Windows 3.1 - one year

Windows 95/98 - 4 years

Linux - one year

I still have two C64's, two floppy drives, one Commodore 1084 monitor (for Amiga) and bunch of old PC's. Too bad that I sold my MSX2+ away few years ago, there were like 2 of those machines here in Finland.

I set the screensaver on my linux box to "operating system screens of death". Whenever I'm away the computer shows the "blue screens" of various operating systems. This makes me appreciate linux all the more.
I always try to keep my computers reasonably up to date. Well, I have a 200 MHz Macintosh clone (PowerTowerPro) and even though it is 3 years old, it can run most modern programs with little slow down. Just goes to show how far ahead of the curve Apple was with their hardware.
MSDOS - 9 years
Windows 3.1 - 7 years
Windows 95 - 6 years (we had a Beta copy)
Windows 98 - 2 years
Windows NT - 4 years
Windows 2000 - 1 year
Mac OS - 4 years
Debian Potato - 1 week
PS. I still use Win3.1 regularly. I have two 486SX/33 machines which run this little gem very neatly indeed.
-MS-DOS(about 4.5 years; since '91 I thought)
-C64 (only for games)
-Windows 3.1(half a year)
-Windows 95(1.5-2 years)
-Windows 98(too long)
-SuSe Linux 6.3 (two months, I believe)
-BeOS Personal Edition 5.1 (two months)
I've never had the chance to try the MacOS (should I be happy?) and I'm now trying to work only in Linux (after I've installed it on this PC). To be honest, I think that I've seen enough of this Micros*** junk. Ever seen an 486 with Win95 after 2 years? (never try it at home!)
I just saw the post of Nitegold... He states he has worked with OSses for over 33 years! Woow.. You must have invented the PC and tested it years before we got it man!!
I can state too that I have worked 8 years with DOS because I sometimes play with it?

Windows 95/98 (and ME when I get it) - 4 years.

Windows NT - 2 Years

Dos - 3 years

Linux - Here and there for about 3 months

Beos - Very little in about 2 months.

Actually I remember using a computer over 11 years ago. I think it was an Apricot. I'm not even sure if it was a PC. I also remember typing on our Oracle machine. It was a wierd keyboard-thing that you attached to your TV. I can remember typing on it in our old house... that means it was 12 years ago at least ;-) I was about 4 yrs old I think.
And thanks wluke for mentioning OS/2, it brings back memories. Our old school network ran 70 Win3.1 PCs off an OS/2 server. Nice stuff. I used to get access to it sometimes. A beautiful piece of work.

freesources> he didn't say he used them consequtively. For example, I use linux, mac, and windows everyday so by your measure I have proabably used computers for longer then I am old (I wish. hehe ).

Well right next to me is a 486 with Win98, Office 97, IE 5, FP 98, and a ton of games.
Performance is pretty bad, but it keeps the rest of the family from using the "Good" computer.
As nitegold mentioned, I also have a little keyboard thingy that connects to my TV. It's a Texas Instruments computer, dating back to the 70s I think (scary thought: it is almost twice as old as me). It still works, and runs what is similar to qbasic.
It's quite easy. You just smart-talk your teachers into giving you two of the old network computers at the end of the year. I've given one to my mum so she can learn to type etc and one to my sister so she no longer needs to use my main puter. Oh, and I'm on my summer break at the min
BTW, I really like Win3.1. It loads in about 2 seconds on my 486DX/33. Unlike Win95, which used to take 5 mins to load on the same machine. I used this machine up til about 1998, with W95, Office 97 and IE4. Yeah it was hell. But I liked it.

The 486 I was talking about had that W95 on it for two years without ever reinstalling it. No matter what you tried, you got:
a/ a blue screen
b/ an error message
c/ reset
