This computer disconnects to the internet after like 2 hours.

However if I just let it sit there, and not surf around etc it won't.

I use the same connection on my other computer but it does not disconnect - ever.

Does anybody know what the problem is? Thanks!

Let me guess after so long you have to reboot the PC to get it to stay connected again.

The issue is with your modem. It is more than likely a win modem (software based). What is the modem?

What happens is after and hour or two they stop transmitting data and you have to reboot to get them to start again. The only way to fix this issue is to change modems.

Could be a modem problem... I recently purchased a new computer and every so often it will just disconnect from the Internet for no reason and not let me log on again, even after 15 or so redials. What I end up having to do is reboot the computer and log on again- and it always works the first time.

The reason I suspect it is the modem is because every time I connect from my other computer using the same dial up account it connects perfectly, with the exception of an occasional busy signal. Looks like it's time to call tech support and get the modem replaced...

By the way, Matt... you may be having a different problem so don't take my word for it, just providing my own connection experience.

Another one of those cases where someone answers the question while I am still typing mine...

That is kind of funny that you would say the same thing that I was saying, Jeremy. Although mine is not a WinModem (hate those things). Still, I would say it is a defect or malfunction with the modem.

Yes, it definitely sounds like a modem problem. When I first got my current computer it would disconnect me if I tried going to any website. I got it replaced and now it works fine (my ISP is run by hackers so they let everyone stay on however long they want even when idle)...

Yep, I have to re-boot my computer back up to connect to the internet again.

I will get a new modem for it Thanks!

Ah, a fellow cable user. I finally meet someone of similar power.

Is it possible it could be something in Matt's preferences? I recall goofing around with some Internet Options in my Control Panel and realizing I could set it to disconnect my connection after idleness for X number of minutes...I set it to some outrageous number (or unchecked the box, not sure) and never had the problem again...

If it's something like this, and not a faulty modem, then perhaps you could make use of a program created by http://www.Addr.com - It sends a "keep me alive" signal every X minutes (depending on what you specify)...I used their trial program and it worked fairly well.

I've tried the "keep alive" programs (Download.com > Keyword: keep alive) and there hasn't been any noticeable difference. Those programs help if the problem lies with your ISP, but make no improvements if it is the result of a faulty modem. That's pretty much what Chris said, but I'm just pointing out that it won't help if it is a modem problem.

Matt, if you want to be absolutely sure, you can try switching the modems and see if that fixes it... that is what I am going to do before I go and get my modem replaced so I don't feel stupid if that's not the problem.

My ISP allows me to set the time before it is automatically disconnected. There are lots of programs out there that do their best to keep you connected though.

Just in case anyone wonders, I use MSN Internet Access.
