Log out of website??

Hi,

im looking for some help oin a matter,I have just had a new dating site made up,I have aproblem with it in as much as when you log in all is ok, but if you do not log out and just close the browser , the site still has you as online.
my developer says this is normal and you need to log out? I understand for example if you just close the browser in facebook the site will auto log you out?

I need members in my site who just close the browser to leave the site to become off line? how do I go about this, or can anyone explain so I can forward the information to my developer?

Most sites that shows their users as online/offline have a timeout where if there is no activity from a user for a certain period of time (maybe 5 minutes), the site shows the user as offline, even though they haven't logged out.

So what do I ask my developer to place in to the site to do this?

Shouldn't your developer already know? You sound like a perfect client, you do the research and inform me of the technical steps required to implement.
