Hi,
Just a new thought that came to my mind ...
Assuming that you're not going along the career path of being a webmaster, what would be your alternative career of choice ?

If I hadn't got a job in the computer business and learnt about the web and web design I would probably still be working in the retail business as a shop manager.

I study foreign languages, so I'd like to do translating, interpreting, or teaching.
Web design was only -supposed- to be a hobby

Don't you get confused with all those languages? I can barely handle English, much less a second language.
If I weren't a webmaster, I'd be a tv/movie actor.

I studied russian on my own for a very short time, but due to lack of resources and ways to practice what I'd learned, I pretty much lost what I -did- know.
Dutch would be an interesting language to learn.. Let's see if I can get these three mastered and then I'll move on to number 4
Believe it or not, I dont get them mixed up (often..), the biggest part is trying to remember them all!
Another job I'd like to have if I weren't webmastering would be an artist/illustrator.

A programmer would be cool. Either Web or traditional software--either would be fun.
(p.s. I don't want to be a Webmaster for a full-time career)

Webmastering is not my full time gig. My regular, put food on the table, full-time job is in the Nuclear Power feild. I work in a Nuclear Power plant. Basically, my job is to maintain turbines and other mechanical systems/components in the plant.
I know that this is a little off what the topic was originally, but this came up in the chat room. A couple of people thought the fact that a Nuclear Power Engineer frequented these forums was pretty neat. I just posted to find out what everyone else thinks.
I'd eventually like to move into backend server development. Believe it or not, Wayne is pretty much where I would like to see myself in a few years. I'm learning it on my own in little bits 'n' pieces.

I will probably get an internet related job in the nonprofit sector, or I will start my own nonprofit organization.
Or.. I could just move to Germany and get a job with Yahoo! Deutschland or something.

I would probably want to be a programmer if I wasn't starting my career as a Webmaster. I'm only starting, though, so I still have plenty of time to decide.

I was going to be a Genetic Engineer.
I was actually doing Genetic Engineering working as a lab assistant in a research lab.
At this point Genetics were my career path and Computers were my hobby.
I had been making sites for myself and others as just a hobby for 4-5 years. Then the lab I worked for needed a comprehensive site done, I did it. I used ASP since the database (of the entire genome of Arabidopsis Thaliana) was already in Access. So I finished the site and then I started looking at job positions for doing what I just did, then when I saw that I could make $140 an hour doing the same thing I just did, while at the lab I was making minimum wage and the older people with their PhDs weren't making much more I decided that wasn't the area for me, and besides I enjoy web design much more than genetic engineering now.

I don't really have any other dreams of things I'd like to do... because before I got into my current "technical architect" role I did (in order):
Audio Engineering - live sound (1 year)
Lift attendant / snow maker (1 year)
Mountain guide / Heli-ski guide (1 year)
Journeyed electrician (4 years)
Computer programming (head down coding) (1 year)
What's interesting is that even though I now work in the computer industry I still do all those other jobs as hobbies. I basically went through each of my favorite things to do until I found one that really has $$ potential and is personally satisfying. I didn't want to end up as a 45 year old who says, "I shoulda done [anything here] when I had the chance."
I consider myself fortunate to have grown up and now live in a time where I can pursue so many different activites and still support myself and my family. Even 10 years ago, it might have been financially impossible to go from one career to another like that. In todays world, it's very easy to just jump ship and move on to something entirely different.
No more excuses to fulfill your dream!

So far, this is what I am planning for my career future...
I am going to be taking classes locally at AIMS Community College. This is mainly because of the fact that I do not want to go through the process of moving, etc., and I can get the type of job I want and education I need locally.
Also, the teacher-to-student ratio is excellent (I believe it is like approximately 1:16-25) as well as the quality of the classes - based on what I have heard from friends/associates who attended there.
I believe that I will be minoring in EMS and majoring in Criminal Justice with an emphasis on Law Enforcement (does all that college talk sound right?).
I will be studying to receive my certification as a First Responder sometime within the next year and I will begin EMT courses sometime my Senior year. I will then continue on and plan on being certified as a paramedic by the time I am 21. I can then get a steady job with the local ambulance service while I am studying criminal justice.
After I complete my Associate's of Applied Science in criminal justice I may continue on and get my Master's (that is too far ahead to think about). Then I can get hired by the Sheriff's Office and work there as well as the Ambulance Service. Cool career, eh? (I think so...)
BTW - I plan to continue my hobby/PT job as a web developer along the way...can't you see it? "The cop/paramedic that makes web sites..."

I found this and thought it was an interesting thread.
I'm not a webmaster, nor do I strive to be. So thats out of the question. But I won't be heading out to find a "career" after I graduate from college. Instead, I'll be starting and running my own business while in college (I'm too stubborn to work for anyone else). Who knows, I might not even last college and end up switching to part-time in order to run my business properly. My major is Business Administration, so once I get into the College of Business at my University I should be learning some skills and methods that will definitely help me out along the way.
The reason I went to college to begin with, instead of starting a business, is because I didn't know what kind of business I wanted to start, plus I wanted the experience. But now I'm getting ideas of what kind of business I want to run, and its only 4 months into my college education! Oh well, stranger things have happened.Ryan Kuhle - A Proud Advisor - Got Questions?
