    What exactly is auto?

I keep reading abiut "auto" as a value used a variety of declarations in CSS. What exactly does this do?

It basically means "use this property if needed".

For example, overflow is a common atribute which you will see set to auto. It applies to a box, such as a DIV, when you want said DIV to have scrollbars. You would say overflow: auto. That means that if the DIV only has a few lines of text, there will be no scrollbar, but if it has too much text, you'll get the scrollbar.

It can also mean "use the default setting". For example, cursors.

    Make sense?
