How to put display Forum Messges on Site pages?

Here on Sitepoint, on the main page there is a link to the newly posted/replied discussion threads updated in real time. I was wondering how to do this as Id like to incorporate this feature on to my site.

Im actually looking to do it in the same way as done here at phpbb.com in a small box to a side.

Does anyone know how it is achieved? Id like it to be displayed on all the pages of my site.

Its done through a "hack" most forums have these. They are additions that are made and allow new features. Sorry I cant point you in the way of the exact hack. You said your using Phpbb if you goto there homepage and check the forums I'm sure you can find more info to find these modifications.
