You'll have to use javascript, either 'pure' or in AJAX flavor
It depends on what progress you want to show.

Googling for it gives lots of results. Look around, see how they did it, or just use one of their solutions.

Most of them use a combination of flash / javasript. I have used ones based on jquery with good results.

Interestingly, but not really of much use to you yet, there are plans to provide this natively.

I'm not keen on the implementation, but that's another matter.
